Antioch: Puppy With Severe Injuries to Ears and Stomach Found at Shelter

by ECT

A six-week old Chihuahua-mix puppy with severe injuries to his ears and stomach was found abandoned Tuesday at Antioch Animal Services.

The puppy was found in the play yard which volunteers believe he was thrown over the fence and left there because the gate is locked at night.

Volunteer Diane Denning found the dog when she was going to clean the play yard. She heard some noises and located the puppy. She went in and got a towel and wrapped him up and brought it to Monika Helgemo, Supervisor of the Shelter.

Fireman then was immediately given to a doctor who sedated the puppy because of its pain.

It was determined that because of his injuries, the dog will have to have his ears amputated after its believed his ears were either burned or placed in chemicals while his stomach suffered similar injuries and are treating it with burn cream.

The puppy was also tested for Parvo which was negative while he also has no flees or worms. Fireman’s nails were nicely manicured so it’s believed someone was taking care of the dog.

Kristy Keusch, who is fostering the puppy, says she has so many questions.

“it’s confusing to me, if they were torturing the dog, why would they take it to the shelter. I have so many questions in my head that I would love answers to. Someone could have just found him and felt bad and dropped him off”.

Regardless of her questions, Keusch said she could not leave Fireman in the shelter after she saw him when she was going to photograph animals so others may view them for possible adoption.

“I couldn’t leave him there. He was in so much pain and scared out of his mind so I decided foster the dog,” said Keusch. “This is weird for me; I tend to stay away from puppies, because I foster adult dogs. I just couldn’t leave him in there.”

The Chihuahua has been named “Fireman” who had been in the care of Animal Services for 72-hours when Keusch began fostering him on Wednesday.

“It’s been stressful; Fireman is nippy because he is so fearful. When I go to pick him up, he wants to bite me. When I give him pain meds and antibiotics he just wants to bite,” explained Keusch. “However, if you leave him alone, he is a good puppy and will come up to you and kiss you on his own.”

She believes the puppy should be available for adoption in mid-May because he has to learn to trust people again.

If I didn’t have 7 rescue dogs I’d take him in.
