Home East County FOMCW: 38-Inch Salmon Found in Marsh Creek

FOMCW: 38-Inch Salmon Found in Marsh Creek

by ECT

The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed had a nice find yesterday as they observed 38-inch salmon in Marsh Creek near Creekside Park in Brentwood.  They pulled the salmon from the creek to observe it, measure it, and released it back into the creek.

According to Diane Burgis, executive director, the find was exciting because the fish was not a hatchery fish because it still has its adipose fin.

Burgis encourages folks to remember it is against the law to catch or bother salmon in Marsh Creek. By letting these creatures make their way up Marsh Creek to spawn and help build the local salmon population there may come a day where there are lots of these in the creek. They are usually in a state of dying so they aren’t good food.

If you recall, the fish ladder was build in 2010 to allow the passage of fish up the creek. Last fall, for the first time in 54-years, a salmon was spotted in the creek traveling upstream to spawn.

So they broke the law and put this fish in danger to measure it? Maybe a better plan was to estimate how big it was. How long was it out of the water ? Any time at all put the fish under undue stress. #LEADBYEXAMPLE

Maybe you should read the article again and pay a little more attention when you do because I did not read the part that said the fish was alive,
And if you were a little more knowledgeable on the things you speak out against you would know from the picture that THE FISH IS OBVIOUSLY DEAD and DECAYING
and a little more attention to detail would make you aware of this before you decided to embarrass yourself by speaking out on and against things you obviously are very much uninformed about

Strange that the article says they caught it, romoved it to measure it then returned it to the creek, then in the next paragraph reminds peoplethat its illegal to bother the fish. Sounds like they are above the law then or hypocrites.

The fish was obviously in the decomposing stage and near death, it has already done its job and spawned. It is great to see our efforts start to pay off.

Brown will kill them all with his two tunnels to send our water south. As the ocean moves in to replace the fresh water. Our fresh water fish will be no more.

@ M longo.. In case you are not aware, Salmon live in both fresh and salt water, and in fact Salmon are born in fresh water rivers and streams and then swim to the ocean to grow up and live their lives before returning to the fresh water streams and rivers to spawn then die there.

Also If you didn’t already know that the Salmon population is in danger elsewhere and that this story or the fact that Salmon are just starting to repopulate the places they once enhabited has NOTHING TO DUE WITH THE TUNNELS sending drinking water south

And if you and everyone else are really concerned with saving OUR DELTA than you can do alot more to save the fish in the delta than spreading fictional B.S and then complaining about it online, and by the way everything that goes into your gutter goes to the delta ( remember that next time you wash your car or driveway and sidewalks down to the gutter cause its the people around the delta that are RUINING it for everyone NOT Jerry brown or the people in L.A
Save your anti-Brown hype for elections, NOT a good news story about our eco system improving and returning to its origin

FOMCW is permitted to access the creek and to deal with DEAD fish. I suppose the article should have said it was carcass but I am sure the writer of this post assumed people would have the sense to figure that out and not make certain assumptions. FOMCW has been working to improve habitat for salmon and other natives by doing restoration work and improving water quality for almost 10 years. We work with all state and county agencies to help document occurrences in Marsh Creek.

We pulled the carcass out in order to document its size, sex and to check and see if it was a hatchery fish. We then returned it back to where it was found. We share that it is against the law to disrupt LIVE fish in order to discourage people from going out and threatening the salmons effort to reproduce. We share this information in order to help raise awareness.

Later this week we will be scheduling Salmon Walks if someone is interested in getting informed about salmon in Marsh Creek and FOMCWs efforts.

Thanks Diane. That is pretty exciting news.

People, settle down. That salmon has already spawned or is in no shape to if he has not. My guess would be already spawned. Having worked in a hatchery, that fish is pretty far gone & it’s remains will feed the fry after they hatch. That is the natural order. I would bet they were able to just reach down & pick it out of the water becasue it’s almost dead. Totally normal & yes, they all die when they come up river.

There you go, they confirmed it was dead already.

“The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed had a nice find yesterday as they observed 38-inch salmon in Marsh Creek near Creekside Park in Brentwood. Maybe you should RE-READ the press release before you post about it, Or maybe I should read it again because I failed to read the part that said the fish was ALIVE,
meaning you are making an assumption about it but if you look at the picture and have any knowledge of salmon or any fish you would realize the fish in the picture is OBVIOUSLY DEAD (not living) and already showing signs of decay..

simple, if your going to speak out on something somebody else did you should at least be informed on the topic and things you are speaking on, and in this case read and pay attention to what you have just read and you would be a little more informed and look a little less _ _ _ _ID
