Under a lottery type draft, Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick drew ping pong balls yesterday evening at Black Bear Diner of special needs baseball players who would compete in the August 3 Challenger Exhibition Game in Pleasanton, CA.

When it was announced last month that East County Little League, Challenger Division,  was chosen to participate in the game the league had the difficult task of selecting 15-players out of nearly 50-players who could play.

In speaking with a few board members from East County Little League, they felt a lottery system was the fairest way to select players. They were more worried about feelings being hurt because they did not want anyone to feel left out. They also wanted to involve the community somehow in the process and thought inviting Mayor Kevin Romick to draw names was a good choice.

The league is still in the process of contacting parents of last night’s draft, but 15-names were drawn as well as 5-alternates. We will post the names when we receive the official word.

The game will be played on August 3 at 10:00AM in Pleasanton, followed by the International and USA semifinal games of the 50/70 Intermediate Little League World Series tournament.
