Overnight Traffic Shifts on Highway 4 Allow Work to Continue on New Lanes

Drivers may have noticed that there is a new traffic alignment on eastbound Highway 4 in the Hillcrest Avenue area. A traffic shift completed on Saturday, August 2 is part of a series of upcoming traffic shifts on Highway 4 in August and September in both the eastbound and westbound directions. This is part of phased construction along the corridor that allows traffic to keep moving as the highway is widened and eBART facilities are completed in the median.

There will be two other major traffic shifts along the corridor in the coming weeks. Details of the overnight traffic shifts include:

  • Contra Loma Boulevard area – shifting eastbound and westbound traffic, anticipated for August 21 and 22
  • Lone Tree Way/A Street area – shifting eastbound and westbound traffic, anticipated for early September

The Highway 4 Corridor Projects are led by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority in partnership with Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and BART. Photographs of recently completed Highway 4 work, including traffic shifts, can be found on the project website photo gallery, 4eastcounty.org/media/photos

The first two segments of construction in the corridor, near Loveridge and Somersville roads, were completed earlier this year, with three more segments in progress from Contra Loma Boulevard to Hillcrest Avenue. These remaining segments are expected to be complete in late 2015.

The Highway 4 corridor improvement projects will bring congestion relief and expanded public transportation access to the 250,000 residents of eastern Contra Costa County through the widening of the highway from two to four lanes in each direction, including an HOV lane accessible to carpools and transit vehicles, and median widening to accommodate BART expansion (eBART).
