Nerd Wallet: East County Cities Make Up Top 4 Worst Commutes in Bay Area

by ECT

This week Nerd Wallet released its worst Bay Area Commutes where East Contra Costa had 5 cities in its Top 10. The list was created after analyzing the major costs: time and money.

The found Discovery Bay, Brentwood, Antioch and Oakley all were the 4-worst commutes.

The list came after the the INRIX Traffic Scorecard was released which f, the San Francisco Bay Area is the third-worst U.S. city for traffic, behind Los Angeles and Honolulu. In addition, the Bay Area has the highest concentration of “mega commuters” — workers who drive over 90 minutes and 50 miles one way to their office.

The key findings included:

  • Commute times vary significantly. Drivers in the South Bay’s Santa Clara County have the shortest commutes at an average of just 24 minutes, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. However, commuters in some East Bay places drive over 40 minutes each way on average.
  • Car insurance costs more in some places. Depending on where you live, you could be paying 47% more for car insurance.
  • Solo drivers, busy highways. Only 37% of San Francisco residents drive alone, while 73.8% of workers in the North Bay — Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties — commute solo.
  • San Francisco commuters take public transit. In the city, 32.6% of workers say they commute by mass transit versus a low 4.3% in the North Bay.
