Byron: Two Patients Airlifted by Helicopter After Three Vehicle Crash on Camino Diablo Road

Just before 7:50 am Monday morning, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to the 2400 block of Camino Diablo in Byron for a three vehicle accident that required two patients to be airlifted to local hospitals in critical condition.

Upon arrival, Engine 59 (Discovery Bay) arrived on scene to find two people laying in the street and assessed the patients. Two patients were determined to be to be suffering from moderate injuries while two others were minor. A second fire engine was requested (Engine 54, Brentwood).

Upon arrival of Battalion Chief 5, two patients were then determined to be critical and two patients with moderate injuries. A fifth patient refused medical assistance (against medical advice). With one AMR unit en route, two additional AMR units were requested. A third ECCFPD engine was also requested (Engine 52, Brentwood).

BC5 was told that AMR resources were depleted and in response a second medical helicopter was requested while the third ECCFPD engine was assigned to Excelsior School in Byron to transport patients via helicopter. A third patient was transported via ground ambulance.

According to the ECCFPD, two vehicles were totaled in the accident. Fire crews were on scene for roughly 90-minutes.

The incident is currently being investigated by CHP.
