Update: Trevor Gillilan is Working Hard to Come Home

by ECT

Trevor Gillilan

We were asked yesterday how Oakley teenage Trevor Gillilan was doing on his road to recovery since being badly burned on August 30 where he was airlifted to UC Davis with severe burns to 63% of his body. Below, we have provided a couple of recent updates courtesy of the Trevor Trevor Gillilan Fundraiser page.

For those looking to follow Trevor’s progress and still looking to help through donations, we encourage you to “like” the page. Original estimates were that he would require at least four-months of treatment at Shriners Hospital in Sacramento.

We wish Trevor and his family the best during his recover!

Trevor continues to work hard every day, he is determined to come home sooner rather than later, so he is pushing himself hard. It comes at a cost however because the pain is excruciating and is extremely hard work every single day simply just to walk. He is still having his bandages changed and wounds scrubbed twice a day. While he remains very brave it is heartbreaking for Rick and Joelle to witness how much pain their son is in especially because Trevor didn’t bring this on himself but was just hanging out with friends on a Friday night. Please keep sending prayers and love their way. This unfortunate incident has changed the course of their lives forever. Hold your family a little tighter, love them a little longer and tell them how much you love them.

Today the nasogastric feeding tube was removed! Trevor is no longer hooked up to any machines or IV lines. A big step in his recovery. He still has a long road ahead. His new skin is still healing as well as all his donor sites. We have been told that his time in rehabilitation will be more painful and trying than anything he endured in ICU – hard to imagine. Needing all your prayers.

Yesterday and today were busy days. They decided to move Trevor out of ICU and down to the third floor earlier than they expected. He still has the feeding tube, but since his vital signs have been stable and he has had no fever and is getting up out of bed and walking they have transferred him to TCU (Transitional Care Unit). There they will continue to control his pain and change his bandages twice daily, but he will have more freedom. He is able to leave his room and engage in activities on the second floor with his peers. They will continue to feed him through his tube but only at night, hoping that will allow him to eat more on his own during the day and finally get that tube out.

His days are now even busier. After his bandage change in the morning he has Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. He goes to school at Shriners Hospital from 12:30 to 2:30 and then Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy work with him again. Occupational Therapy has fitted him with a compressive chin strap which he has started to wear for a couple of hours a day, increasing the time he wears it each day until he will wear it for 23 hours a day. Both therapies had him using a wheelchair to get himself around, but they have informed us they are “taking that away” because they are confident he can get himself around well enough on his own. It is hard work, he tires easily and must take breaks but we can see how much he is determined to get through it. He wants to go HOME. We can’t wait for that day.

My sister was severely burned about 25 years ago. She spent over 3 months in the hospital and went back for several more surgeries. But today she is fully functioning working, she finished raising her 2 boys went back to school and became a medical assistant and now is a grandmother of 3 beautiful boys. I feel her life started again that day and so will Trevor’s. It’s a very painful thing to go through for Trevor but also for the family I know. But I also know there is a light at the end of this long tunnel and I hope you all get there very soon. Prayers for all of you.
