Oakley: Vehicle Accident Shuts Down Main Street

by ECT

A vehicle accident that took out a utility pole has closed down Main Street in Oakley at Rose Ave shortly before noon. The road is expected to be closed for several hours.

East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Oakley Police responded to a vehicle accident which occurred at 11:58 am and we are told the driver explained to police that he was only going 40-mph. The driver was no injured and AMR was cancelled.

Oakley police worked quickly to secure the scene and divert traffic away from the incident. Its unclear at this time if its a PG&E or AT&T pole, however, power has been knocked out to surrounding neighborhoods.

Police is encouraging commuters to take alternate routes.

How long will power be out?

I drove by the scene at 4 pm and there was NOBODY on scene. OPD had the lane coned off and had cleared. The pole was hanging and the transformer was laying on the ground. The scene may had been secure but there still was a hazard to the public. Someone, at least the PSA/CSO shoud have been sitting there. Just another example of the poor level of service that the city receives from our police dept. Yes, its boring, yes it can be considered a waste of time, but if something had happened, the city’s liability would have been HUGE!

(when I came back through about 30 minutes late, PG & E was just getting on scene)

Shocking! (literally)

Had to be going more than 40 MPH to shear off a pole with a small car.

looks like the kid that lives on my street. always speeding and reving his motor. burning rubber in a residential area. no respect for others.

Did you ever think that maybe the few cops on duty had to leave to attend to another serious incident??? You probably didn’t.

Wow, didn’t know ECVsBrother was a crash scene expert, as well. A simple Google search gleaned that tests by more official organizations than, say ECV, determined that significantly lighter cars (a Ford Escort, for example) completely fractured a wooden utility pole at 29 mph. Add-on factors like age of the pole and amount of stress on said pole from utility wires, and the speed necessary to fracture the pole is even less.

Stick to witty comments about people’s intelligence or integrity, or lack thereof. Leave the forensics to the experts.
