Oakley PD Forced to Shoot Pit Bull While Searching For Suspect

by ECT

oakley police car

Oakley Police officers shot a pit bull on Gateway Drive  Saturday while searching for a subject who ran into a home and evaded police.  The incident caused the road to be blocked off with multiple officers responding to the incident.

According to Oakley Police Chief Bani Kollo, officers were responding to a call of a suspicious circumstance that resulted in a subject running from a stolen vehicle. Oakley Police were not able to capture the subject who was seen going into a house. In the process of searching for the subject, Oakley police had to shoot a pit bull who charged the officers and their K9. No officers were injured in the incident, however, the pit bull is deceased.

Little details are being provided about the suspect at this time while the incident is still under  investigation.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Oakley Police Department.

Editorial Comment:

We encourage our readers to trust the actions of Oakley PD yesterday as we can assure you no officer ever wants shoot ones pet unless absolutely necessary. We encourage you to give them the benefit of  the doubt as they work this case. Its important to remember that when searching for a subject, officer safety is priority number one!

The pitbull charged because people burst threw its door into ITS home. The same way a human would pull a gun on an intruder in ITS house. Shame on you guys.

Sarah Aug 26, 2013 - 12:36 pm

This is California, dogs don’t have the right to protect your property, and neither do u! You can only shoot a person if ur in fear for your life, not just cause they came in looking to rob u. If u draw a gun and they try to leave u cant just shoot them! Your dog can only defend a person in a life or death situation, otherwise the other person’s rights r being violated. Unfortunately for all of us!

Melodye Aug 27, 2013 - 2:10 pm

Yes it is California. But the Police DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SHOOT….If you hear the story from the family. They were pulled from their house at GUNPOINT by Oakley PD. If Oakley every touches my Pitty there will be hell to pay!!!!!!!!!

Shayne Aug 25, 2013 - 9:33 pm

Blame the guy that ran into the house, not the police doing there job. Grow up.

LLAB Aug 25, 2013 - 10:54 pm

She wasn’t blaming the cops! You grow up! She was stating a fact ;(

Barbara Aug 25, 2013 - 9:47 pm

I am sure the officer that had to fire that bullet didn’t feel good about it. Most K-9 officers take their dogs home at the end of their shift and love them as their pet. Sorry about the dog’s demise 🙁 Perhaps the homeowner that allowed the suspect in should be charged with animal cruelty! Failure to protect goes for humans and animals. Could have protected their beloved dog better by not associating with criminals! Bottom line, don’t want the cops in your house? Don’t break the law!!!!!

LLAB Aug 25, 2013 - 10:52 pm

You don’t know that the criminal was associated with the home owner!

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 1:44 pm

Now a days, it doesn’t mean that the person lived there just because they went into the home. It also doesn’t mean that the homeowner allowed this person in. Bottom line, the dog did not deserve to be shot. Sad. The officers dogs are expected to serve and protect…….I would hope my Rottweiler would protect me and our home, just as this dog was instinctively doing. When a officers dog is shot, it is considered a officer who lost its life. A officer who lost his/her partner. When we loose our pet due to a wrongful shooting by an officer…..its not treated in the same manner, not even close, but we loose our partner.

Cheryl Rogers Aug 26, 2013 - 7:28 pm

I agree with you and… If you knew the cops were coming in after this guy why didn’t the owner contain their dog? I would have put mine up .. at the very least leashed him/her.. terrible tragedy for a dog thats owners didn’t protect it.

Teiryn Ott-Bales Aug 27, 2013 - 2:40 pm

They asked to put their dog away when the police asked to search the premisses the cop denied his request and cuffed him putting him in the cop car…

Teiryn Ott-Bales Aug 27, 2013 - 2:38 pm

They didn’t allow the suspect to come in the suspect went into another house next to this persons house and waited there until it was clear to leave…. They didn’t associate with the criminal.

Leah Aug 27, 2013 - 4:32 pm

And yet they paid the price. I am glad to see so many people being positive towards this family and the sad situation. Minus the few who find is easy to say derogatory things and post things to make people look bad even when they did no wrong. Sad.

angelina Aug 25, 2013 - 10:32 pm

Completely disgusting!! I know the owners of the pitbull and I hope the owners pursue a civil lawsuit against the officer, oakley PD and the city…

LLAB Aug 25, 2013 - 10:53 pm

Good call Angelina!

Marcus Griffin Aug 26, 2013 - 1:25 am

thank you angelina!!! love you we’ll have to have lunch or something an talk about this.

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 1:46 pm

I hope so too! I live just around the corner…I heard the shots. I am so sad this happened.

LLAB Aug 25, 2013 - 10:57 pm

While I know the OPD has a job to do, I wish to God they were better able to do their job without having to kill a dog doing its job!

Melinda Sanders-Tidwell Aug 25, 2013 - 11:08 pm

This is sounding like Travon martin! Police have the right away! Yes even in your house if a criminal is running from them.

Sarah Aug 26, 2013 - 12:37 pm

Check ur Travon facts, Zimmerman wasn’t a cop

IbeforeE Aug 27, 2013 - 10:50 pm

Look, I am an animal lover and this is truly a sad situation, but please don’t compare this to the Trayvon Martin case. Completely different situation.

Marcus Griffin Aug 26, 2013 - 1:02 am

Im the owner of this dog his name was boss he was the best and obedient dog. What happened was very tragic and has startled the whole family. These police were told by my uncle to let him put the dog away and they told him no, detained him and put him in the police car. Then they went into the backyard knowing there is a dog when a tenant at the house offered to put him away and ignoring that and still proceeding to kick in the side gate and shooting my dog. It was beyond unnecessary and wrong. Then going into the house guns drawn an pulling my grandmother age 70, out of her house at gun point and detaining her without telling her what was going on already after shooting my dog. Then while detaining my grandmother the police wouldnt let her use the restroom after she asked several times. The police were rude to her and when she tried to get up and go to the restroom they made her sit back down. Because she couldnt hold it anymore and they werent letting her get up she ended up having an accident. Also this article says “Oakley Police were not able to capture the subject who was seen going into a house.” he never ran into the house, he ran through the side yard. So these cops not only commit murder to our family pet after the fact of being offered the chance to put the dog inside and away from harmimg anyone, to kicking in a side gate of the house and searching the house an kicking in a double door causing numerous unnecessary property damages, an to top that off elderly abuse. These cops are trigger happy rookie cowboy police an i fear for my families and my life!! Please help get this story out these cops don’t deserve the right to be called policeman thank you for those who commented I do not want this being ignored this could happen to anybody. Lets help prevent this from happening again thanks.

Brandy batze Aug 26, 2013 - 7:18 am

I am so sorry for the loss of your dog.

LLAB Aug 26, 2013 - 9:42 am

Please do pursue this! While I do support our local police officers, there is always a few trigger happy cowboys out there that need to be punished for their actions ;(

charles Aug 26, 2013 - 2:36 pm

Question, was the person they were chasing live there? Did they shoot your dog before or after the person was in custody?

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 3:01 pm

If you read what he wrote about this, you would have those answers. The person did not live there, the person didnt come IN the house and……..the home owner asked the officer if they could put the dog away and the officer said no. They then proceeded to go to the yard, busting stuff along the way and then shot the dog. As well as being abusive to the grandmother!!!!!!!!!!
They didnt catch the person from what I have read. This is nothing but BS. I would be beyond pissed. Hell, I am and it has nothing to do with me!

Cheryl Rogers Aug 26, 2013 - 7:32 pm

I am so sorry for your loss and if the police would not let you contain your dog then you do need to pursue this… find yourself a good attorney I wish I had seen your post before I commented I apologize clearly you all tried to cooperate.. so sorry again for your loss.

Duke Duarte Aug 26, 2013 - 7:58 am

Sadly police sometimes make poor decisions or mistakes during the course of their work just like the criminals they pursue. Unlike criminals, their intensions are to protect and serve for the good of the entire community.

Cage Aug 26, 2013 - 12:39 pm

Why don’t we tell all the facts…your family has been responsible for a majority of crime in this city for over 10 years. Between drug violations and the family past time of stealing vehicles. I would say your brothers should have locked up the dog, but they are in prison.

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 3:05 pm

And that is the dogs fault? If this family has a past of doing some bad things, you are instantly judging them for something someone else does? How much of the facts do you know?? And what part of it means shoot the dog?

Joe Aug 26, 2013 - 5:41 pm

well said.

Jack Aug 26, 2013 - 5:46 pm

agree with you 100% Cage. this family is a menace to the community. they do nothing but bring that entire neighborhood and city down. i do not feel bad at all for them, they have caused many families hurt and its about time they get some.

leah Aug 26, 2013 - 6:22 pm

It is easy for people who know them to say things. I understand. I’m sticking up for the dog that shouldn’t have lost its life due to human stupidity.

angelina Aug 26, 2013 - 10:38 pm

Your ignorant!! So due to family history its okay to murder an animal? Shut the f**k up, your so stupid for making this statement.

shawn Aug 27, 2013 - 12:03 am

so jack i am sure your ancestors did some fucked up shit and if the “got whats theres” by someone killing you is that right, your an ignorant as fuck.

angelina Aug 26, 2013 - 10:35 pm

What the hell does the family history have to do with the murder of their family dog and the mistreatment of an elderly woman??? Your disgusting & shut your mouth!

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 11:02 pm

Exactly!!!!! To come on here and slam people like that…..thats really pathetic.

[email protected] Aug 26, 2013 - 12:41 pm

they wouldnt have been shpt it had it been any other breed … and it wouldnt make news if it hadnt been a pittbull I LOVE PITTBULLS ! JUDGE THE DEED ,,, NOT THE BREED !!!

Eric Aug 26, 2013 - 1:32 pm

Think about it, if the suspect who was near a stolen car had not run from police this entire incident would not have happened to begin with. That guy is an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony Aug 26, 2013 - 2:25 pm

Maybe if the cops did their job better they wouldn’t of lost who ever was running and the pit wouldn’t of had to protect his house. Maybe the guy running didn’t even go into that house. Shame on the police officers who did this. Maybe pepper spray would of been an alternative but I guess they are soul less and didn’t give one
F#<K.

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 2:47 pm

If you read higher up here, the owner of the dog states what happened. I hope they can get some justice not only for their pet, but also for the treatment of their family.

leah Aug 26, 2013 - 6:34 pm

IF what some people are saying is true about trouble with this family….rephrase…some of the family members, why does the whole family get patronized? Just wondering. Is the grandma out stealing cars and doing drugs? My statments have to do with a innocent animal. Just clarifying.

Leah Aug 26, 2013 - 9:56 pm

They told the officers of the dog and asked to put it away and they were told no.

tONI ANICIA KYLE Aug 27, 2013 - 6:37 am

bs Aug 27, 2013 - 10:59 am

WOW!!!!! Hello…….. you say why didn’t the brothers put the dog up? oh yea because their in prison you forgot…..what was that a news flash…… you know i say that you are in need of a life (of your own) because you sound like you know way too much about a neighbors or close friends business….
a innocent dog got KILLED you shallow idiot yea you must not like animals your self coward…. ty

Leah Aug 27, 2013 - 12:54 pm

I know huh? Some people. I know the street I live on, is quiet, but there are always neighbors who just have nothing better to do than to start stuff over really stupid things. Like parking! OMG
A hand full of them act as if there names are personalized on the curb. One of my neighbors had their vehicle stolen a few days prior to this happening. The man came over and yelled at my son and his friends, and did nothing less than accuse him of doing it. Are you kidding me??? My son would never ever do such a thing. Seriously, he would not. He is a good guy. Mind you, this is the first time this neighbor has come to my house in all of the 6-7 years I have lived here. So, my son likes fast cars, works on cars and enjoys life? He works a honest job, and he is kind and he doesnt do hard drugs, steal or go to jail. Some neighbors either need to help their fellow neighbors or mind their own business!

tbeezyy Aug 27, 2013 - 12:58 pm

sorry about your dog Marcus.. if only OPD did their job right this woulnt have happend, just another reason why i got outta oakley.

Ed Aug 27, 2013 - 1:38 pm

Sad, just so sad. A dog is allowed to protect it’s property. Cops have become a little too trigger happy lately. Shooting a young deer in someone’s backyard, shooting a yellow lab in another backyard, shooting baby mountain lions and now this.

Tracy Aug 27, 2013 - 2:41 pm

I wonder if the police officer would of shot their dog if it was a lab running towards them? Most dogs always come running if someone enters the backyard. They are there to protect the house. This is a sad story one that I hope the officer realizes he made a mistake and reacted just because this dog was a pit bull. I have a pit bull and all I know is anyone ever did this to my family and killed our pet I would be filing a lawsuit as well. This situation had nothing to do with this poor family and it sounds like they were treated like criminals which is sad and wrong. I fully support our police departments and appreciate what they do but somehow this situation wasn’t handled properly and it looks like an innocent dog was killed for no reason. Best of luck to this family.

Ryan Aug 27, 2013 - 5:39 pm

F—OAKLEY POLICE. If I was the owner of this dog I would not be able to contain myself and I would do everything in my power to kill the punk ass trigger happy pig that did this shit. Call me irrational, crazy, stupid, whatever. But I consider my dog family and to me it would be no different than if they killed a brother or uncle or any other family member. Motherfuckers were on a power trip and weren’t thinking rationally. STUPID PIGS SHOULD HAVE LET THE OWNER PUT THEIR DOG AWAY. Not detain them, when they had nothing to do with the reason the cops were there in the first place. WHO DO WE CALL WHEN THE POLICE MURDER? Arm yourselves and protect you and your family and your animals by any means necessary. The police don’t give a fuck about you or your well being.

ECVsBrother Aug 27, 2013 - 7:08 pm

Nothing like stating your mind Ryan. There have been multiple animals shot by police in Oakley. Maybe it is time to look at a different policy. The whole thing stinks but if you were not there it would be hard to judge. The owner of the animal who was there should have his day in court to right things made wrong by the government. To mess with a little old lady in an aggressive manner would be similar to assaulting her. I wasn’t there but that would really boil my blood if there was misconduct to her.

Benage Clark Aug 27, 2013 - 8:48 pm

oh by the way i thought i might give a lil info about the case that i found out one of the OWNERS asked to put the dog away and the police arrested the guy cause he wanted to put the dog away the police knew BEFORE entering the premises there was an animal there. this was an un called for death. you say the safety of the officer is priority number one then why not take ONE of the owners to tie up the dog. no you want to SCARE a 70 year old female.

George A Guevara Aug 28, 2013 - 5:01 pm

Stupid trigger happy uneducated cops

Moe Aug 29, 2013 - 10:42 pm

The Oakley police are going to continue about their business and nothing will ever get resolved from this particular issue.. This world is curl and extremely unpleasant, and unfortunately the police and anyone above them; simply don’t give a fuck.. Sad. Karma will one day serve them right.
