When firefighters are not fighting fires or responding to a call for, you can add crime fighting to their duties as the Station 93 crew  helped detain two teenagers who were in the process of stealing.

The incident occurred around noon Wednesday afternoon where Station 93 firefighters were observing an incident behind the station and sprang into action with what they thought was a crime occurring. They called Oakley PD and when they realized police would not arrive in time they hopped in the engine and made their way to the incident.

With the engine at the scene, the firefighters detained the teenagers and waited for police to arrive.

According to Oakley Police Chief Bani Kollo, he stated the fire department didn’t assist, but rather they observed, processed, contracted and detained subjects based on what they thought was a crime in progress.  Oakley PD arrived and took custody of two juveniles and arrested them for theft.

The Chief stated the marijuana grow was very small in nature.  The juveniles were cited and released to their families.

“What separates this community from others is the willingness of the general public in reporting suspicious activity,” said Kollo. “That said, credit on this one goes to the folks in the big red truck, and we always appreciate the extra eyes!”

No further details about the location or incident were provided.

How could they NOT assist but DETAIN at the same time. What a joke of a statement Chief Kollo ( if you were quoted correctly). Also Chief, if the kids were not stealing in the presence of the Officer, who made the arrest for the Officer to issue a citation?
If your calling it a crime, cut the crap and get the real truth out. Who did the Oakley PD take custody from? The Firefighters were just observing or is there more to it? Good job ECCFPD! You were involved and did apprehend the criminals. Time for Ace Ventura again to crack this one.
