The family of SSG Joseph Marcel, a US Army Airborne Medic for the 10th Mountain Division, says he was injured during his last tour in Afghanistan and is asking for the public to send him an “E-Greeting Card”

According to his brother Eddie Marcel, Joseph suffered irreversible damage to his spine and has undergone multiple procedures to improve his quality of life—on Thursday, will undergo a complex and intensive spinal procedure involving his neck.

“He won’t fully recover, it’s simply a matter of improving his quality of live,” says Marcel. “I’ve invited the community to send well wishes to him via the hospital website where volunteers will read all received messages to him.”

As a Combat Medic, Marcel performed three Tours of Duty, he risked his life to save the life’s of others. He received the Medal of Valor for rescuing the pilots of a downed helicopter during his second deployment in Afghanistan. He sustained injuries during the rescue but recovered and was deployed again.

In 2013, the Oakley City Council recognized Marcel. Marcel moved to Oakley in 1994 and graduated from Freedom High School in 2005

“I am extremely proud of my brother for the lives he saved, but humbled at the cost of his sacrifice,” said Eddie Marcel.
