Oakley: Dutch Slough Homeowner Chooses Not to Rent to Sexual Predator

by ECT

According to an email this morning, the property owner of a home in the 2400 block of Dutch Slough Road in unincorporated Oakley has decided not to rent out his property to house a sexually violent predator.

In the email, the property owner highlights the property was going to be rented to Liberty Healthcare and they intended to place Robert B. Bates in the home. The decision has now been made not to rent to Liberty Healthcare.

According to the property owner, the decision came given the opposition by the community and Mr. Bates will have to find housing at another locations after his release. Liberty Healthcare was notified Tuesday morning.

The move comes after a decision by Contra Costa County Judge Patricia Scanlon in October who agreed to allow Bates to live in the home even though several local officials and public spoke out against the move.

Bates has been convicted of multiple violations of Penal Code 288 Lewd & Lascivious Acts with a child under 14) and Health & Safety Code 11380 (Furnishing Controlled Substance and Marijuana to a minor).

Details later emerged the three incidents occurred against young boys between the ages of 6-15 years old between 1989-1995 all occurring in West County.

Several elected officials who have publicly argued against the move include: Supervisor Mary Piepho, Oakley Mayor Doug Hardcastle and Vice Mayor Kevin Romick. Oakley Police were also not in favor of allowing Bates to move onto Dutch Slough Road as was the County Sheriff’s office due to the rural location.
