Firefighters Respond to Homeless Encampment Fire on Ironhouse Sanitary District Property

by ECT

At 1:30 pm Saturday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a reported vegetation fire at a homeless encampment located on the property of the Ironhouse Sanitary District in Oakley.

Several callers reported seeing a large cloud of black smoke in the air from Vella Cir.

Upon responding, firefighters realized there would be no access to the fire near Picasso Dr. once they saw the smokes location.  Crews had to turn onto Main Street instead of continuing down E. Cypress Road. They made access through the Ironhouse Sanitary District which had a series of locked gates which delayed response.

After making access, the fire was put out quickly and required about 40-minutes of mop up to ensure no flare ups would occur. There was also several homeless camps at the location.
