At 1:25 pm Tuesday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the 5000 block of Kelsey Lane on a report of a smoke alarm in the City of Oakley.

While responding, it was reported that smoke was coming from an apartment and upon arrival, E53’s crew confirmed the smoke and heard a cry for help. Firefighters entered an apartment charged with smoke and pulled out an 80-year-old female victim to safety. She was transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation.  They also rescued a cat.

A second male victim also suffered smoke inhalation and was also transported.

According to Fire Marshal Steve Aubert, the victim was believed to have been taking a nap at the time and did find evidence of materials on top of the stove which caught fire. He said this is a possible hoarder house with lots of combustibles inside and said the fire sprinklers did activate and contained the fire to the single unit.

Units from both the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded along with AMR and Oakley Police Department.
