Delta Science Center Hosts Volunteer Rally

by ECT

The Delta Science Center will be hosting a volunteer rally on June 22, 2016 at 6 pm at Round Table Pizza in Oakley to gear up for the 2016-17 summer and school year activities.

The group is looking for people who love the Delta and are interested in working with like-minded people to help educate the school aged children and public on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Those interested need not have any experience, just an interesting in helping and learning about the Delta.

The Delta Science Center was formed more than 20 years ago as a grass roots effort by local citizens to help inform local residents about the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecology. Since then the organization has built a classroom learning program for elementary and high school students, worked on various Delta related grant studies connecting high school students with universities and attended local fairs and festivals dispensing information. The organization also assisted East Bay Regional Park District is the planning and developing of the Big Break Regional Shoreline Park.

This summer the Delta Science Center has a wide array of programs that will include working on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Educational Resource Guide Calendar for 2017. The resource guide goes out to 7,000 East Contra Costa County and Delta fifth grade students. Volunteers are needed to take pictures for the calendar and help research education information.

Other programs include helping to set up a Delta tour, working on a fundraiser for the calendar program and volunteers to help set up and attend fairs and festivals throughout the region.

The Delta Science Center is also looking for people to work with and possibly become members of the Board of Directors.

For more information, email Roni Gehlke, executive director of the Delta Science Center, or come to the meeting at Round Table Pizza, 2190 Main Street, Oakley at 6 pm on June 22.
