Congressman McNerney Says Offices Will Remain Open During Government Shut Down

Washington, D.C. – Last night, the Republican-led House of Representatives failed to compromise with the U.S. Senate on a budget bill, causing appropriations to lapse and the federal government to shut down at midnight.  During the shutdown, Congressman McNerney’s offices will remain open to assist the people of California’s Ninth Congressional District and answer any questions they might have.

“Shutting down the government is reckless and will harm the well-being of millions of Americans. The shutdown is sending 800,000 people out of work and will cut federal services that so many people rely on.  The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land and should not be used as an instrument to shut down the government.  Health care affects each of our lives, and we should work to improve upon and address the imperfections in the health reform law instead of holding the government hostage,” said Congressman McNerney.

“While this shutdown continues, my staff and I will be here to answer questions and offer any assistance we can.  My priority has always been to serve the people I represent, and that is why my offices will remain open during the shutdown,” said McNerney.

Congressman McNerney has two offices in California: one located at 2222 Grand Canal Blvd. #7 in Stockton, and one located at 4703 Lone Tree Way in Antioch.  Both California offices and his Washington, D.C. office will remain open.

The first day of government shutdown is also the first day that people can enroll in California’s health insurance exchange.  Information is available at www.coveredca.com.  Californians can enroll in the exchange starting today and through March 31, 2014.  Coverage for those enrolled will begin on Jan. 1, 2014.

“We have already seen some of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act go into effect, and today marks the first day that Californians can enroll through our health insurance exchange.  On this day, I call on my colleagues to get back to doing the business of the American people.  It’s time to pass a budget for our country and end the government shutdown before it does even more damage,” said Rep. McNerney.
