Brent Smith Named as Oakley’s New Community Development Director

The City of Oakley is announced the hiring of Brent Smith as its new Community Development Director.

Smith worked with the City of Oakley from 2006 – 2014 as the City’s Chief Building Official. He is rejoining Oakley as the Community Development Director where he is charged with overseeing the activities and operations of the Community Development Department including planning, building inspection and compliance, code enforcement, housing element compliance and coordinating assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies

Brent Smith is a US Navy Veteran and a seasoned local government leader with over twenty-five years of experience in planning, building, and management. Smith recently came from the City of Livermore where he oversaw various divisions and worked closely with economic development staff, businesses, and community members. His previous experience includes the implementation of citywide programs, the development of city facilities, and managing large teams toward collective goals.

City Manager McMurray is pleased with the adding Smith to the City’s leadership team, “Brent’s combination of broad industry knowledge and professional experience, his focus on excellent customer service and vision for the Community Development Department are the reasons why Brent was selected. He will maximize the talents of the wonderful team of employees that he will lead.”

Similarly, Smith is glad to be back. “I am happy to be rejoining a team that is committed to working hard and being creative to resolve issues that help to enhance the community and make it a great place for everyone to live, work and play,” says Smith.

His first day as the Community Development Director was February 28, 2022 and while just starting, he already has big plans, “I look forward to helping Oakley attract quality developments and encourage thoughtful growth as we work together to develop an inclusive, diverse and safe community”

Smith has a B.A. in Management from Saint Mary’s College and is an International Code Council (ICC) Certified Building Official, Plans Examiner, Building Inspector, and Combination Inspector.

Smith’s selection as Community Development Director is the result of an extensive recruitment process that begin on November 18, 2021. Smith was selected as the City’s top pick from a total of 21 applicants.
