At 2:05 pm Monday, the Oakley Police Department responded to a report of a street sweeper into a tree at Laurel Road and Brown in the City of Oakley.
It was reported that a rescue by the fire department was needed, however, the driver fled the scene and for a short-time, authorities could not locate a driver. The driver was later located further down the road at Laurel and Empire with no injuries.
The driver stated to police there was a metal item in the road that made him skid over the curb where he struck the tree.
Oakley Police questioned the driver about why he didn’t stop and determined that his commercial drivers license was expired. Police attempted to get another driver from his company to the scene to drive the vehicle. After that was unsuccessful, the vehicle was being towed and cited the driver.
Police told the driver go to the 7-Eleven and wait for a ride to get out of the sun and heat. Police did confirm that the driver of the street sweeper did have a valid C Class license.

Was the driver sweeping at the time of the incident or traveling down Laurel?
By the skid marks, looks like he was traveling down Laurel.
Was the metal piece which caused the incident recovered?
Are the authorities checking cell phone records?
On a related subject.
I travel Laurel daily. If the city of Oakley has made this main access/egress to the city then it warrants it being swept every other day as there is a large amount of debris on the bike lane/shoulder and intersections!
What IS IT with drivers of various vehicles are now aiming at trees??? What have the poor trees done to deserve this? Maybe trees should be surrounded by strong, wrought iron fences to give the tree at least a chance to remain upright. Why did the idiot driver FLEE THE SCENE? He should have stayed with the tree and called the police himself. What a putz!
