Oakley Police Chief Dan Gomez offered some tips on helping prevent car thefts from occurring after statistics showed an increase of thefts from vehicles in the month of January when compared to December.

The month of January 2014 saw an overall decline in the number of reported crimes from the previous month of December 2013. One area in which we did see an increase is in the number of thefts from vehicles.

Often times, criminals will walk through a parking lot or down a residential street looking in vehicle windows for valuables in plain view. The thefts in Oakley were not limited to one specific area of the city, so I would like to urge everyone to take simple steps to safeguard property and reduce crimes of opportunity.

When leaving your vehicle unattended:

  • Always lock your vehicle
  • Close windows and sunroof
  • Do not leave items of value in plain view including:
    • Phones
    • Lap‐top computers
    • iPads & iPods
    • Charging cords
    • Cameras
    • Portable GPS units
  • Do not hide a spare key in your vehicle and always remove the garage door opener from a vehicle not stored in a garage

Taking these steps to protect your property will reduce the likelihood of your vehicle being targeted by criminals.

I appreciate the tips, but isn’t that all part of common sense when parking and leaving your car? It’s no wonder thieves have it so easy. Crimes of opportunity still exist.
