A small vegetation fire Wednesday morning  shut down Bethel Island Road in both directions at 11:23 am for nearly 40-minutes.  The incident was about 50-feet of fire which ended up on both sides of the road as crews from two engines worked put out the flames.

The incident was located about a half mile from the Bethel Island bridge where drivers could have used Sandmound Blvd to get on and off the Island. Both lanes of traffic were re-opened shortly before noon as Engine 94 stayed on scene to ensure the fire did not start back up.

Crews were on scene for about an hour.

The photo below was taken by April LaPearle who managed to take the shot prior to fire crews arriving on scene. Nice work April!

Again a fire in an area that the City of Oakley is responsible for. How about some weed abatement before we get a serious fire going and loose some structures?

Last year I did offer to clean a 1/2 mile stretch of the shoulder and ditch from my home to Jersery Island Rd All I asked was for the city dump truck come out and pick up the waste, we would even load the damn thing. We planned to clean all the dead weeds and grass from along the edge of the roadway to the fence line. I was told by Jason Vogan that while he understood what I was trying to do, I couldn’t do it. So while I was complaining about the problem, I did offer a solution and was rebuffed.

Hey Barbara… keep in mind that you can go paint a fence this weekend, but not allowed to whack some weeds. Hog wash… let me know if you want to plan something out that way and we will make it happen.

Last year I did clean directly across from me and sprayed round-up on the weeds in an attempt to save my yard from more damage. I have already started talking to neighbors about a clean up due to the fire danger (last weeks fire scared a few of them). The biggest problem is safety. While painting a fence in town along a neighborhood road is slightly dangerous, working along East Cypress Rd with people driving 55+ mph and not paying attention is downright scarey! The lack of traffic enforcement has allowed people to believe that this stretch of roadway is a speedway-its Ok to go as fast as you can at any hour, day and/or night.

Too bad the county and the cities don’t care about weed control on their roads. They sure don’t have a problem sending people notices to clean up their weeds. The fire department should start charging the public works for not abating the weeds. Maybe then the county and cities would get their fire prevention act together. What a waste of valuable resources that we do not have at this time.
