Update: Suspect in Oakley Fatal Pursuit Booked, Faces Murder Charges

by ECT

The Oakley Police Department announced Wednesday that Javonte Mathis, 22 of Concord, has been booked in the Martinez Detention Facility after failing to yield to police before the fatal crash occurred.

On Tuesday at about 8:27 AM, an Oakley Police Officer was performing traffic enforcement in the area of Main Street and Bridgehead Road when he saw a white Toyota run a stop sign. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not yield and sped away at high speed. The pursuit went westbound on E. 18th Street in the city of Antioch. Between Wilson Street and Phillips Lane, with the nearest police car several hundred yards behind, the vehicle collided with a power pole and a fire hydrant and caught fire. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot. The fire department and PG&E were notified.

Officers later spotted the driver nearby entering a vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident and went to a local hospital for injuries apparently sustained during the collision. Mathis has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on two charges: murder and evasion causing death to a person. He is being held in lieu of $1.1 million bail.

IMG_8471It was later discovered that inside the vehicle was a deceased passenger. The identification is not available as the Coroner’s Division and the Crime Lab are working on positively identifying that person.

Officers recovered a loaded semiautomatic pistol near the burned vehicle. It was later determined that the gun was stolen.

The officer who attempted the traffic stop is Deputy Sheriff Ian Jones. He has been with the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff for 20 years and is currently assigned as a traffic officer in the city of Oakley.

This incident continues to be actively investigated by the D.A’s Office, Oakley Police Department, Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff, the Antioch Police Department, and the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) per the countywide officer involved fatal incident protocol.

Do these criminals actually bring firearms into gun free zones? I mean, if there’s a posted sign, why would they disobey it? I wonder if this was Obamas son too…

People seem to be more worried about a gun in this idiots possession. People were more in danger of his driving. Look at all these nuts driving on Hwy. 4 for example. It is POSTED 55mph. Why? It’s a construction zone. Oh but, WAIT. Everybody else is going as fast as 60+mph. So, it must be okay to drive this 2000 pound vehicle at such speed that it won’t hurt, physically and mentally disable that person(s) or kill that innocent child. Get real people and step back and take a closer look at this article above. If you were the fly on the wall and know everything about this incident then say something to local law officials.

Wasn’t it most likely the stolen gun in the car that made stopping when being pulled over a bad choice, at least in the driver’s mind? If it hadn’t been for the stolen gun, he might have gotten a ticket for running a red light instead of a murder charge. Of course there’s a lot of interest in the gun and where on earth it had actually come from — where had they gotten it?

You have to look at all the details, what if the car was stolen and the gun just happened to be in the vehicle. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people, I’ve owned a gun all my life and it never jumped up and shot nobody. What about the family that has lost a son or daughter. Let’s be real about this, people make bad choices all the time. Thank God no one else was a victim of this incident.

Whats all the concern about the gun? Who gives a shit about the gun? Does anybody have ANY concern about the person that lost their life? And the fact that the driver let his “friend” to burn up in the car? What a guy ….. But hey……. Lets focus on that gun……
