At 11:12 pm Sunday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection responded to a two car accident at the intersection of Byron Highway and Marsh Creek Road which required one patient to be transported via medical helicopter.

Engine 59 (Discovery Bay) arrived on scene to find the two car accident with major damage to the vehicles. Initially Engine 59 requested additional resources due to multiple vehicles and lanes blocked but later cancelled the resources. Later, the call was upgraded to a helicopter transport and required response from Battalion Chief 5 and Cal-Star1.

Bother patients suffered moderate to major injuries with one patient was transported by ground by AMR to John Muir Trauma Center in Walnut Creek while the other was transported by CAL-Star1.

The probable cause was listed as a “possible drunk driver” and the incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
