Shortly before 10:00 am Sunday, a man led authorities on a pursuit through East Contra Costa County for more than an hour before being taken into custody in Stockton.

According to Oakley Police Sargent Robert Roberts, Oakley police received a call around 9:50 am that a white Mercedes was driving recklessly–Saturday morning they received two calls of the same vehicle also driving recklessly and believe they are related. Sgt. Roberts  explained that he pulled up beside the driver who had passed him driving slowly screaming and waving at him.

Sgt. Roberts said he though the man was either on drugs or 5150 (Psychiatric).

“When I pulled him over, he put his car in reverse and began to back up towards me. He didn’t hit me, but he put his car in drive and took off,” explained Sgt. Roberts. “Normal people do not do that. Usually it’s somebody wanted for something we don’t know about and do not know who they are or what they have done. My main concern was for everyone else and what he could do in that vehicle.”

Sgt. Roberts said it was one of the slowest pursuits he had been in traveling anywhere from 15-mph to 40-mph through Brentwood. The pursuit began at Main Street and E. Bolton Road in Oakley and traveled south towards Brentwood. Once passed Brentwood, the Mercedes briefly hit 80-mph before dropping back down to the speed limit all while flipping people off, yelling at people and acting erratic.

According to Sgt. Roberts, the pursuit between Oakley to Discovery Bay resulted in 7 red lights being run, however, the driver did slow down as he approached intersections before running the lights.

Oakley Police had multiple units in pursuit with a unit dropping off the pursuit in Brentwood with another dropping off in Discovery Bay when California Highway Patrol (CHP)  joined in. Once a second CHP unit was involved, Sgt. Roberts dropped from the pursuit near the Highway 4/I-5 in Stockton.

Once Sgt. Roberts and Oakley Police were no longer involved, the man led CHP on a pursuit for an additional 70 minutes before successfully laying a spike strip to blow tires out in Stockton.

Once the Mercedes stopped, the man would not cooperate with authorities and a K9 was released to the vehicle where the man suffered a bite. The man was then taken into custody and booked on charges in San Joaquin County. The driver of the Mercedez was determined to be on methamphetamine’s.

According to police, the man is facing several charges which include drug charges, DUI, felony evading and resisting arrest.

Sgt. Roberts praised the caller who reported the initial reckless driving.

“It’s huge whens someone calls in. Citizens are our eyes when we are not around,” said Roberts. “In East County, we are blessed that people call in as often as they do. They are saving lives and god only knows what a driver will do when they drive recklessly. Everybody says someone else will call but then no one calls. This one ended well because of a single caller and no one was hurt except the driver who had a dog bite.”

Glad he didn’t hit anyone. My girlfriend died in April when she was hit by a woman under the influence of prescription meds and other drugs. No alcohol.
