PG&E and City of Oakley Collaborate on Luminous New Additions

Conversion to LED streetlights brightens the community and provides customers with safe, reliable, clean and affordable energy

OAKLEY, Calif. — Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) and the City of Oakley have announced a collaborative effort to convert approximately 2,000 non-decorative PG&E-owned streetlights to energy efficient and longer lasting light emitting diode (LED) fixtures. PG&E installations began this week and will continue through the end of the month.

“We are proud to work with the City of Oakley to brighten the community with LED streetlights. These innovative streetlights not only promote sustainability and energy efficiency, but also public safety,” said Vic Baker, Diablo Division senior manager for PG&E.

LED streetlights use 50 to 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and requiring less maintenance. New LED streetlights, which provide a more natural-looking light, can last up to four times longer than traditional bulbs. The optical technology in LED lights creates more evenly distributed light, resulting in greater visibility for pedestrians and drivers alike.

“We are always looking for opportunities to be more energy efficient and we appreciate PG&E’s efforts with this retrofitting. It’s a major enhancement that helps accomplish improved safety and savings,” stated Mayor Doug Hardcastle.

Each installation takes approximately 10 minutes per lamp fixture. Customers will be notified of replacement activity occurring in their neighborhood prior to PG&E’s arrival. PG&E expects no service disruption as a result of this work.

PG&E also has energy efficiency rebates and special rates to incentivize the installation of LED fixtures on customer-owned and maintained streetlights, such as those owned by cities.
