Oakley Seeks Citizen Input on Re-Launching Planning Commission

by ECT

The City Council is asking for community input to help to determine the interest of community members to serve on a separate City of Oakley Planning Commission or to join the existing group of Citizen Planning Advisors.

The move comes as the City Council opted to survey residents during their January City Council meeting where the council was split on whether to re-launch the Planning Commission, or keep the decisions for the council to make.

On Tuesday, the Oakley City Council held a work session on the creation of an Oakley Planning Commission which has prompted the city to create a survey to send out to residents to gauge interest in participation.

The city had a planning commission for approximately 10-years before it was deactivated in 2009. The goal of Tuesdays work session was for the council to provide feedback to staff on a direction. Back in January of 2016, the council discussed the idea of recreating the planning commission, however, it opted for a “Planning Commission Advisory Group”.

The City Council is now considering whether to:

  • re‐establish the Planning Commission as a separate body
  • or keeping the responsibilities of the Planning Commission as they are currently set up, which includes a small group of residents who serve as Planning Advisors

Since deactivating the planning Commission, the Oakley City Council has acted as the Planning Commission, and the Planning Advisors assist by reviewing potential projects and providing recommendations to the City Council.

The City Council has directed Staff to develop this survey that will measure residents’ satisfaction with the current set up and also gauge the level of interest that our residents may have in serving on a Planning Commission and/or as Citizen Planning Advisors.

Engage in Oakley is an online platform which was launched by the City in 2016 to offer the public a convenient way to share their thoughts on City projects and issues. Engage in Oakley can be accessed at www.ci.oakley.ca.us/engage‐in‐oakley/.

The Engage in Oakley post provides background information on the Planning Commission, followed by a questions and opportunity for citizens’ comments and engagement.   We invite residents to log online and take the Planning Commission survey by Monday, March 8th.
