Oakley Police Chief on Driving Under the Influence

by ECT

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is both illegal, and a tremendous danger to public safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 10,000 lives would be spared each year if drunk driving was eliminated.

Statewide, well over 150,000 people a year are arrested for DUI. In the City of Oakley, 80 people were arrested for DUI in 2014. This is an increase from the 73 people arrested in 2013. In addition to the tragedy that can result from DUI crimes, there is also a financial loss associated in the form of fines and court penalties. We in California love our cars.

Driving is a way of life for many of us. Often times the inconvenience of a suspended driver license can result in lost wages and add great strain to a family’s ability to make ends meet.
In spite of the dangers, and financial loss, many people still choose to drive while under the influence.

If a preventable crime exists, this is it. A person makes a choice to consume alcohol or drugs when they know full well they will be driving. The Oakley Police Department will do our best on the enforcement side of the equation. This year we will add DUI enforcement patrols on random evenings, we will participate in County wide multi‐agency DUI enforcement operations, and we will offer many of you a chance to say hello to our Officers at a Sobriety Checkpoint.

DUI prevention is the other part of the equation. This is where we can all make a positive difference by being responsible in our individual choices, having a designated driver, and by offering to drive our family and friends who may have had too much to drink. There are even smart‐phone apps designed to help users determine their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) before deciding to get behind the wheel. Additionally, please do call the police to report suspected drunk drivers, and call the police or Alcohol Beverage Control Board (ABC) if you witness a local establishment either allowing underage drinking or selling alcohol to minors.

Thank you for doing your part to increase public safety.

Drive Safe,
Chief Dan
