Updated: One Dead in Early Morning Oakley Structure Fire

by ECT

At 2:30 am Monday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a report of a residential structure fire on Star St. and Fifth Street in the City of Oakley.

Firefighters arrived to a home fully involved with possibly a person inside.

According to Battalion Chief Ross Macumber, crews were able to pull a male victim from the home and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The District believes the male was homeless who was squatting in the home.

The District added that although PG&E gas was on scene quickly, it took PG&E electric more than an hour to arrive which prevented firefighters from fully putting out the fire. Once electricity to the home was secured, firefighter operations continued.

No further information was provided.

Oakley – At 02:33am, East Contra Costa firefighters along with units from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire on Star Street in the City of Oakley. Upon arrival fire units encountered a fully involved structure fire with overgrown vegetation and hoarder like conditions in the home.

According to neighbors the home was supposed to be unoccupied but that they heard someone scream for help from the home as they noticed the fire. Fire crews searched the home while extinguishing the fire and found one male victim in a rear bathroom. The victim was taken to the hospital by an AMR ambulance crew. Unfortunately the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. There were no injuries to firefighters.

Fire crew searched for additional victims and none were found. The property owner arrived sometime after the fire started and he stated that the home was unoccupied and was not aware of anyone inside the home.

Fire crews were also pulled from the structure after the victim was located due to the inability to secure the electricity. PG&E had a one-hour response time to the scene. Once PG&E was able to fully secure the electricity, Fire crews were able to re-engage the fire to fully extinguish it.

The overgrown vegetation and hoarder-like conditions made fire attack and overhaul extremely difficult.

This is the first fire fatality due to a structure fire in the fire district in over a decade. The fire is still under active investigation with assistance from Contra Costa County Fire Investigators and the City of Oakley Police Department.
