by ECT

At 3:38 am Saturday, East Contra Costa firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 2600 block of Dutch Slough Road in Oakley.

While responding, station 94 (Knightsen) observed flames from E Cypress Road and upon arrival located a shed type structure with smoke and flames coming from the structure. No other structures were threatened. PG&E was called due to wires down.

Firefighter stated that the occupant exited the structure prior to firefighter arrival. Firefighters from station 94, 93 and E88 (CONFIRE) made fire attack and by 3:55 am, the fire was knocked down.

According to Battalion Chief Jake Gonzalez, the cause of the fire was due to a malfunction with an interior wood burning stove per the witness at the scene. He says the fire appears to be accidental in nature.

Editors Note:

This incident used up all of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District resources along with a unit from CALFIRE and Contra Costa County Fire.

With Engine 52 on a medical call at the time of the fire, CALFIRE (Marsh Creek) was requested for a medical in Discovery Bay for stroke-like symptoms. Engine 52 become available after clearing their medical call and responded.

However, a few minutes later an Oakley medical call came in for someone having difficultly breathing and CALFIRE was requested to respond to that call.
