It was a celebration yesterday afternoon in Oakley as the City and its partners held a ribbon cutting for the $1 million Marsh Creek Restoration Project at Creekside Park.

The project was five years in the making as the grant will help restore 1,000 feet of Marsh Creek by providing plant shade trees, construct a creek side natural trail, and build a pedestrian bridge to link Marsh Creek Regional Trail and Creekside Park.

Speakers included Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick, Keith Flavetta (Office of Congressman Jerry McNerney), Satinder Malhi (Office of Senator Mark DeSaulnier), Erica Rodriquez-Langely (Office of Assemblyman Jim Frazier), Sarah Puckett (American Rivers), Diane Burgis (Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed), and Mitch Avalon (CCC Flood Control District and Water Conservation District).

The project partners included:

  • American Rivers
  • Contra Costa Flood Control District
  • Contra Costa Resource Conservation District
  • Contra Costa County Department of Conservation
  • East Bay Regional Park District
  • East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy
  • Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed
  • Restoration Design Group
  • Suultaaq, Inc.

Permitters include:

  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • Army Corps of Engineers
  • California Department of Fish and Game
  • Regional Water Quality Control Board

The project was actually featured in American Rivers on February 13 which is a nice read.

What is the point of this project other than moving some dirt around? Lame!

Lets get something similar in Antioch going. We need good publicity!
