Oakley: 10-Year-Old Suffers Severe Hand Injury After Suspected Firework Explosion

At 12:52 pm Saturday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Oakley Police responded to a report of an explosion on Almondtree Circle in Oakley.

Upon arrival, firefighters located a 10-year-old juvenile with a traumatic hand injury. A medical helicopter was immediate requested where the youth was transported to UC Davis after landing at Delta Vista School on Frank Hagel way.

According to a source, it is believed that the juvenile was playing with fireworks when one exploded in his hand. The juvenile lost several fingers and suffered other damage. No further details were provided.

Several witnesses stated hearing a loud explosion prior to emergency crews arriving on scene while other said a firework went off in the garage where the juvenile was located.

According to the Oakley Police Department on Sunday, the incident is still under investigation but stated they suspect a firework of some kind went off.  They said the hand was really bad but no further details were provided.

No update on the 10-year-old’s condition has been released.

Poor kid is going to be disabled for the rest of his life with 1 functional hand. Parents need to do a better job of teaching their kids not to mess around with fireworks.
