Man Arrested After Attempting to Steal Fire Truck in Oakley

Just after 11:00 pm Sunday, as East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters were battling a vegetation fie, a male was arrested after attempting to steal Engine 53 in the City of Oakley.

The incident took place at E Cypress Road and Broadway Lane in Oakley.

According to Fire Marshal Steve Aubert, he confirmed the incident noting that the crew noticed the lights of the engine had turned on and the crew ran to the engine and tackled the male and detained him while Oakley Police arrived on scene.

Aubert confirmed the arrest, but no other details were released.

Sunday night, East Contra Costa Fire battled several vegetation fires including fires at 8:56 pm at E Cypress and Main Street, 4200 block of Knightsen Avenue at 9:57 pm, Byron Highway at Herdlyn Road in Byron at 10:54 pm, SR4 at sand Creek at 12:56 am and the incident on Broadway Lane at 11:00 pm.

Update
Oakley Police identified the suspect as Arturo Hernandez, 39 and a transient.
