East Contra Costa Firefighters Rescue Man After Van Enters Canal

by ECT

At 10:03 am Sunday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of an overturned vehicle at Sandmound Blvd near Bethel Island Road in Oakley.

Upon arrival, Battalion Chief 5 located a van on its side that entered the canal with a male victim pinned inside.

Firefighters arrived and were able to free the man who was suffering possible head and internal injuries as he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Patient care was then transferred to AMR where the patient was eventually flown to John Muir Medical Center by CALSTAR.

Crews were on scene for roughly 90-minutes.

The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Did they bill the injured man for their service ? This policy is a joke. We already pay taxes for this.

These guys are HEROS. Firefighters that go to work everyday understaffed to protect 110,000 people. It’s the equivalent of going to a gun fight with a knife. Not safe for the citizens they protect or themselves. Don speaks the truth but don’t discount the understaffing that these 9 -10 firefighters deal with daily trying to protect 110,000 citizens covering 250 sq. miles.

Old news and it’s their job. Firefighters are there by choice as is any other trade. Don’t forget of the 250 square miles 200 of it is open space and backed by Cal Fire with endless resources. Don’t fool yourself. The firefighters are respected for what they do. Let’s not get too pigheaded. The problem is their leadership that has failed the community and the firefighters.

Uno. Another thing why would cal fire be responsible for non SRA are (stare responsible are) which I would tend to believe the city of Brentwood and Oakley are not. Nor are other small county pockets. Why would Cal fire come in and bail out an area that can not offer any help on large campaign fires that affect the state of California. How many Engines from ECCFPD Went to help on the Butte fire in Calaveries county and the fire in clear lake last year. My guess is zero!!!! But when things go south here we should be comfortable putting our hand out for cal fire to protect our understaffed underfunded fire dept.

If your fantasy is going to work it better not be during fire season and cal fires resources are depleted. Once again google my name and give me a call.

Once I got to think about your answers to ECCFPD my thought was are you part of the leadership?

Too bad those heroes helped themselves to a 15 percent raise and killed any chance for future funding. Not to mention the new fee they are charging to cover their raises.

I think that is what Don was referring to.

Anon!!! Your so right. But keep in mind these 10 guys make 50% of what the firefighters next door make. And they are putting themselves in danger every time they pull out of the station. They are understaffed for the area and population they cover. If something happens to one of them on a house fire/commercial fire or a vehicle accident and it gets out how they (ECCFPD) is doing Buisness, heads are going to roll.

Even with that 15%raise they are under paid and under staffed. UNDER STAFFED IS THE REAL ISSUE. It takes 15 firefighters for a one alarm fire to protect property and life. THERE 5 short if all are available. More short if there not cutting your family out of a head on collision on vasco road.

Hate the game!!!!! Not the players. I would love to help you make sense of it all. I believe you are smart!!!

I am easy to get a hold of. Google the name. Look forward to helping our community and fixing the ECCFPD. Short and long term. ITS BIGGER THEN YOU AND I. 1110,000 citizens and 10 under paid and UNDERSTAFFED FIREFIGHTERS PROTECTING US.

Your absolutely correct uno!!! Speaking of trades are you going to ask one carpenter to build you a house from start to finish? Framing, plumbing, electrical etc. be great if you had 10’yrears to wait to move in. In a emergencie you don’t have that luxury.

But once again you nailed it. Lack of leadership from the top down!!!!

My question is, if we had eight fire stations with x dollars and x residents and now have more dollars with more residents, what happened to the dollars to shrink us to three stations?
