City of Oakley to Host Suicide Prevention and Intervention Workshop

The City of Oakley, in partnership with the Contra Costa Crisis Center, will be hosting a “Suicide Prevention and Intervention Workshop” on Thursday, November 20th. The event will take place in the City Council Chambers located at 3231 Main Street and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Presenter Lesley Garcia, MS will provide an introduction to the subject of suicide and a framework for effective suicide prevention and intervention within the community. She will outline the scope of the issue and discuss suicide statistics, why some choose suicide, address risk factors, and myths and realities. The workshop will equip “in‐situ gatekeepers” ‐‐ persons in positions that are likely to be told of suicidal intentions and called to become spontaneous heroes how to intervene and help. Lastly, the conversation will close with treating and preventing suicide.

The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session.

Lesley Garcia is the Team Leader/Supervisor of the Crisis Intervention and 2‐1‐1 Information and Referral Services. Garcia originally began with the Crisis Center as a volunteer and later became staff specializing in crisis response and community education. She returned to graduate studies and spent the last decade as a counselor and department chair for Los Medanos Community College and Holy Names High School respectively before returning to the Crisis Center in her current role. Lesley earned her BA in Psychology, her MS in Counseling and holds a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.
