Becoming An American Workshop Comes to Oakley

You, Me, We=Oakley! in collaboration with the Oakley Library is hosting a “Becoming American” Workshop as part of the East County Reads An Immigrant’s Journey, program.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, November 2nd from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Oakley Library located at 1050 Neroly Rd. Oakley.

The community is invited for an engaging presentation on the history of immigration policy in the United States from the 1880s to present. Attendees will walk away with historical context and driving factors that have shaped the demographics of immigrant and general population in the United States.

The speaker will be the Professor of Law and Migration Studies at the University of San Francisco, Bill O. Hing.

Hing has numerous publications on the subject matter including Ethical Borders—NAFTA,
Globalization and Mexican Migration
(2010); Deporting Our Souls—Values, Morality, and
Immigration Policy
(2006), Defining America Through Immigration Policy (2004), To Be an
American: Cultural Pluralism and the Rhetoric of Assimilation
(1997). Throughout his career,
Professor Hing has pursued social justice by combining community work, litigation, and
scholarship. He is notably recognized as the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource
Center (ILRC) in San Francisco and is a member of the San Francisco Police Commission.
