Oakley: Two Firefighters Suffer Injuries During Sunday Single-Alarm Fire

by ECT

At 5:51 pm Sunday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the driveway with exposure to a home in the the 4600 block of Lariat Lane near Terra Verde Lane.

IMG_4564Upon arrival, firefighters located heavy smoke with an active fire coming out of the front of the home.

As firefighters arrived, Oakley Police and sheriff’s deputies were making their way from the home trying to see if all occupants were out and at least two classic cars were spared as they were moved out of the garage area. No occupants were home at the time of the fire.

The responding units included Engines 93, 52, and 59 of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District along with two units from Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Engines 81, 88, 82).

Engine 93 began defensive operations until the arrival of additional units where firefighters were then able to attack the fire from the inside and cut ventilation holes in the roof. The ventilation holes allowed firefighters to get the fire under control within 30-minutes.

According to the ECCFPD, two firefighters sustained injuries. A CONFIRE firefighter suffered a cut to his wrist during fire suppression which required medical attention and a transport to a local hospital.

Chief Henderson said an initial evaluation at the hospital determined that there did not appear to be any nerve or tendon damage as a result of this laceration.  The firefighter was released from the hospital after treatment and is to be reevaluated in approximately 2 weeks.

In addition, Henderson said a Contra Costa Fire Captain suffered an ankle injury during fire suppression activities at this incident, however, no medical attention was needed.

Chief Henderson said the fire caused about $400,000 in damages with the fire having started in the kitchen area.

The District believes the fire originated from a wall mounted microwave which caught fire and spread to the attic.  The damage included heavy fire, water and smoke damage to the home. Salvage was conducted throughout the incident to preserve personal property of the owners and overhaul was completed.

The district added that during the fire, all resources were committed for a period of 3-hours.

Other incidents that occurred in the District while our units were handling the structure fire:

  • 6:09 PM               PG&E pole fire/wires down-Oakley
  • 6:23 PM               medical-Brentwood
  • 6:45 PM               vegetation fire-Brentwood
  • 6:48 PM               medical-Brentwood
  • 7:07 PM               medical-Brentwood

The above three medical emergencies were handled by American Medical Response (AMR) without assistance from fire due to lack of resources. The vegetation fire and pole were handled by Cal fire units covering the area.

It seems like the workman’s comp rate will rise again. I do hope these firefighters are OK. Since they train daily and have so many safety requirement rules by the union. It is sad again this little fire would take two more out. How many are on medical now ? Its almost like it was a plan. Geesh, shut this district down and let the state step in. The county doesn’t give a crud.

@ FF Supporter,

Your little hidden agenda is so transparent. You are fooling no one…except yourself. It’s almost like you think you have a plan

Keep posting.

Thanks ECT for reporting ALL of the facts about the fire coverage in East County.

Inside Outside Aug 19, 2015 - 3:14 pm

“Firefighter supporter”, worker’s comp will surely continue to rise-especially now that the Governor has changed safety retirement to increase the age of retirees. Older firefighters will now retire out on tax free disability. Guess the governor, the contra costa times and the taxpayers association didn’t really think that through.

Safety requirements in the fire service are not the responsibly or necessarily driven by unions. They are brought on by agencies like the NFPA, IFSTA and the employer. Since the unions responsibility is to protect members I’m sure they participate. You seem to have a problem with this or unions, yet you use the name “Firefighter supporter? Strange.

If you actually took the time to read the story, you would know that this “little fire” ($400,000. in damages) resulted in injury to firefighters from Con Fire-NOT east county fire. One of those injuries was so minor that it didn’t take anyone “out”. He did not even require medical attention. No one from east county fire is on medical leave as a result of this incident. Again, Did you even read the story posted above? Strange.

Shut the whole thing down? Remind me again what facts would support your opinion as to why you would even suggest that? That’s your plan? Strange.

The county doesn’t give a crud? I guess because you didn’t read the story that you missed the part about the county lending aid to east county once again. Two of the county firefighters were injured. For a county that doesn’t give a crud (your opinion) they sure seem to send east county resources on a consistent basis. You need to think, before you engage.

Let State step in? Come again??? Why would the state step in? Your comments are nonsensical.

One thing is certain…You are not a firefighter supporter.

ConFire does not equal the County.

The State Attorney or LAFCO needs to step in before lives are lost. The county could step in but it could care less. All we get are threats to stop mutual aid.The cities are at a stalemate. Mr. Frazier you are an honest supporter of East County. We need help before loss of life occurs due to the lack of action. There are all sorts of attacks and political maneuvering on a selfish level. There is a ton of gibberish by trolls here.Nevertheless the fact is we need your help Mr. Frazier. Please take a lead on this someone dies. The latest is they want to hire an assistant to the Chief. The public has been told there is no money. Too many lies.We need a leader like you Mr. Frazier please before it becomes tragic.

No one is going to step in to save this district. Cal Fire looked at this area, and certainly cannot provide service any cheaper than what East Contra Costa is providing now. If the wish of the voters is to join the larger Con Fire, the county and Cities of Brentwood and Oakley will have to come up with signifigantly more money. The 3 cents per property tax dollar is barely enough to run volunteers, much less a paid professional fire department. I agree with the comments above by “Inside Outside”, that many people think that they have all the facts, but are completely ignorant to the facts. I would challenge anyone to come up with an effective fire department coverage model for 249 square miles, and a population of 250K +/- with the joke of a budget that East Contra Costa receives. The biggest laugh that I get is the fact that many residents think that the firefighters in this district are “hogs” feeding off the public trough, insinuating that these guys make big money. Nothing could be further from the truth, these guys make a fraction of what any other firefighters in the area earn, and many make less than what Cal Fire pays.
I truly feel sorry for these guys, and hope that none of them are killed and injured protecting the citizens of east county. I see (and applaud) massive insurance premium increases for the property owners in east county as the ISO and Insurance companies figure out that fire losses are skyrocketing.

Safety First,

Thank you for your comments. You “get it” and have apparently done your homework. Let’s hope that the power of good information will continue to spread and at some point, actually make a difference. With knowledge comes solutions.

FF Supporter, Your rants are becoming familiar. You need to step up and deal with reality before making such a fool of yourself. When is the last time you checked with any official (county, LAFCO, Assembly or otherwise) before just assuming you know better. I personally don’t think you have invested the time or effort.
If you had, you would already know that your commentary makes no sense.

The State AG has nothing to do with this issue nor do they have authority to “step in”. In case you were wondering, it doesn’t work that way. CCLafco is fully aware of what has transpired, but lacks any real will or authority to do anything given the current state of the district. Wake up and realize that this is an INDEPENDENT district which is currently has the only responsibility of running the fire district. The county and the state cannot just “jump in” because you don’t like what has transpired. It’s not a county OR state fire district. Fire protection is a privilege-not a constitutional right.

Mr. Frazier is well aware of the status of the district. Not only does he live in Oakley, but he was a former member of this fire board. He is also keenly aware that he has no jurisdiction. Call his office or call him directly. You really think he want’s to touch it with a ten foot pole? Think again.

“Me thinks” its you “fire supporter” that needs a civics lesson. From where I sit, You are the one “issuing all sorts of attacks, political maneuvering on a selfish level”. Take a look in the mirror; You are the troll providing gibberish by the ton. Talk about lies and denial…and a genuine lack of research. YOU take the cake.

If you actually believe you have any of the answers please enlighten us how you arrived at your conclusions. Osmosis?

Your posts continue to lower the bar on common sense.
