The City of Oakley has selected Dan Gomez, a 22 year law enforcement veteran, as new leader of the Oakley Police Department.

As part of the City’s contract for police services with the Contra Costa County’s Sheriff’s Office, the local police force is built by Sheriff Deputies and a supervising Sheriff Lieutenant that serves as the Chief of Police. Last month, Bani Kollo who had been Oakley’s Police Chief since September of 2010, was promoted to the rank of Captain and called to another assignment, leaving the Oakley’s position open.

Chief Gomez was selected among a very qualified pool of candidates after two rounds of interviews. The first panel, consisting of City and Police Staff, City Council representatives and Oakley resident and Police Department Chaplain, narrowed down the pick to the top candidates.

City Manager Bryan Montgomery said, “Chief Gomez is a solid, seasoned law enforcement professional and we look forward to his skills and expertise to lead our outstanding team of police officers.”

Gomez joined the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff in 1992. His assignments with the Office of the Sheriff have included Court Services, Detention Division, Patrol Division, the San Ramon Police Department, Emergency Services, and Law Enforcement Training Center. Most recently Chief Gomez served as the Assistant Patrol Division Commander.

Prior to commencing his law enforcement career, Gomez joined the United States Air Force in 1984 and served eight years. His military service included a tour of duty in the Middle East during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991.

The San Diego native now resides in Concord, California with his wife, Colleen, and their teenage son.  Gomez also has twin daughters, one attending college in Southern California and the other is married and lives out of state.  When not at work, his hobbies include spending time with his family and friends enjoying outdoor activities such as boating, hiking and camping.

Chief Gomez is looking forward to getting to know the Oakley community and the City organization, stating, “I am very excited to be joining the Oakley Team.  I look forward to working with a group of extremely professional police officers and the very talented and dedicated men and women on the City team in Oakley.”

The new Chief’s first day on the job will be Tuesday, January 21st.
