San Jose Unified Quarantined Under Orders from County Health Until April 3

On Friday, the San Jose Unified School District is now under orders to be quarantined to protect students, families, teachers, staff and the community from the Coronavirus (Covid-19).

According to an announcement from Superintendent Nancy Albarran, the orders came from the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department in an effort to reduce the number of people infected and protect the most vulnerable to severe illness.

The orders include:

  • Effective at 11:00PM on Friday, March 13, 2020 all San José Unified locations are closed due to quarantine until at least April 3, 2020.
  • Students are not to attend school until the quarantine ends. All student absences will be recorded as excused and no assignments nor grades shall be recorded throughout the quarantine
  • Students and families shall take home all personal belongings at the end of the school day on Friday, March 13, 2020. This includes any medications that are stored in the health office.
  • Employees are not to report to work until the quarantine ends. All employees will continue to receive regular compensation and benefits without the loss of sick leave throughout the quarantine.
  • Employees shall take home all personal belongings at the end of the school day on Friday, March 13, 2020. This includes all live animals and perishable items in classrooms.
  • San José Unified will provide only essential services throughout the Employees required to report to work to provide essential services will be informed of such requirement through their supervisor.

If you are at higher risk of getting very sick from #COVID19, you should:
• Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others.
• When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact and wash your hands often.
• Avoid crowds as much as possible.
• Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel.
• During a COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed.
• Stock up on supplies.

Who is at Higher Risk?
• Older adults
• People who have serious chronic medical conditions like:
— Heart disease
— Diabetes
— Lung disease
A COVID-19 outbreak could last for a long time (An outbreak is when many people suddenly get sick). Public health officials recommend community actions to reduce people’s risk of exposure.
