Here is a look at events occurring today across East Contra Costa County.

First Light – Wild West Bass Trail (Big Break Marina)
This tournament series will be held at Big Break Marina in Oakley and will launch at first safe light. Weigh in is estimated to occur around 3:00 pm.


8:00 am: Brentwood Farmers Market
Join the Brentwood Farmers Market which runs every Saturday now through November 19 on Oak Street in Brentwood. The market runs from 8:00 am to noon.


8:00 am: 3rd Annual Poker Run/Scavenger Hunt
VFW Post 10789 will hold its 3rd Annual Poker Run / Scavenger hunt on May 14th 2016. There is a kids area with jumpy and crafts and games. Raffle prizes for kids and adults, Pancake breakfast and lunch included in event.

All funds raised got to helping Veterans and their families in our district which includes Bethel Island, Oakley, Knightson, Brentwood, Discovery Bay and Byron. Doors open at 8am for Breakfast (757 1st Street, Brentwood), Tickets are $25.00 for individual and $45.00 for a family of 5. For more information, contact Maggie Sandoval at (510) 410-2725.


8:00 am: Oakley Has Wood Chips/Mulch Available
Wood chips/Mulch will be available for pickup tomorrow, Saturday, May 14th from  8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the City Yard at the corner of Neroly Road and Main Street  (entrance on Neroly). Oakley residents need to bring their own tools/shovels and  bags/containers  to  load  and  carry  the  mulch,  and  a  tarp  to  cover  if  necessary.  Residents are asked to not take more than 5 yards at a time.


8:30 am: John Marsh House Guided Hike
The John Marsh Historic Trust announced that on May 14, the public will have a rare opportunity to enjoy a hike through part of the Marsh Creek State Park, usually closed to the public.

Participants may enjoy panoramic views of the area; watch raptors ride the morning thermals; and get a sense of the trees, wildflowers, rock formations and other natural features of the property. The hike is 3 to 4 miles, and includes some moderate elevation gains.

The $20 fee is tax-deductible, and will help support the John Marsh Historic Trust’s efforts to restore John Marsh’s 160-year-old Stone House, and open other parts of the 3,700-acre park to the public.

10:00 am: New Life Ministries Water/Child Safety Day
The public is invited to attend a Water/Child Safety Day at New Life Ministries in Oakley on May 14 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at 4246 Empire Road in Oakley. This will be the 11th year the church has hosted this free community event and the first 225 children that show up will receive a free life jacket—up to 90 lbs.

Also in attendance will be the US Coast Guard Flotilla, EMS, Oakley Police Department, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa County Sheriff Marine Patrol.


10:00 am: Lumpy’s Diner Car Show
It’s that time of year again…join us at the Lumpy’s Diner in Antioch for our annual spring car show hosted by the Midnighters Car Club of Northern CA. Cash prizes and trophies.

Registration will be available the morning of with Kathleen of the Midnighters from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. We do not accept pre-registration and it fills up fast so please anticipate arriving early. Located at 5891 Lone Tree Way, Antioch CA


11:30 am: Community Celebration of Marsh Creek Watershed
The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed invite the public to come explore Marsh Creek and the Delta shoreline.  Residents will get a chance to visit the Dutch Slough site and learn about future plans for trails, a community park, restoration along Marsh Creek, and a 1,100 acre tidal marsh restoration at the mouth of Marsh Creek. Everybody is invited to this Community Celebration of Marsh Creek Watershed!

This free, family-friendly watershed celebration will take place on Saturday, May 14, from 11:30 to 3 pm with an optional creek clean-up event at 9 am.  The lunchtime celebration kicks off at 11:30 with a free lunch provided for volunteers that participate in the clean-up event.  Lunch can be reserved for $10 if you register for the event. Between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, the public is invited to walk around the Dutch Slough project site levee. There will be interpretive stations with information about the project, native plants and animals, cultural resources and local viticulture.  A van will be available to shuttle members of the public who may need assistance.

12:00 pm: Zinfest Wine Festival (Lodi, CA)
Sip, swirl and savor from a selection of 200 handcrafted wines from over 40 Lodi wineries. Passionate winemakers and winery representatives welcome guests, offering practical knowledge and sharing their delicious wines. Enjoy local provisions, learn some new tips at the ZinFest Wine and Cooking Schools, or relax along the beautiful Mokelumne River to an eclectic mix of live music. Guests can peruse merchandise from regional vendors and take home a commemorative bottle of custom blended Old Vine Zinfandel from the ZinFest Wine Shoppe. There is no better way to celebrate the fantastic wines of Lodi Wine Country! Tickets include a ZinFest wine glass, wine tasting, participation in seminars and entertainment. Festivities are held from 12 noon – 5 pm.

2:00 pm: El Campanil hosts Contra Costa Orchestra
Formed in the late 1970s, the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra has established a presence throughout the county.  The orchestra is comprised of forty-five musicians ranging in age from 15 to 94 who are music teachers, accountants, students, electricians, mechanics, homemakers, lawyers, retirees, dentists, engineers and computer specialists. Primarily Contra Costa residents, their only remuneration is the stimulation and satisfaction of rehearsing and performing together.  In addition to the five-concert season at the Lesher Center, the orchestra also nurtures its dedication to the community by providing affordable performances to the residents of East Contra Costa County at El Campanil Theatre.

5:00 pm: Oakley Chamber of Commerce Wine & Whiskey Event
The Annual Wine and Whiskey Event will be held on May 14th, 2016 at La Grande Event Center. Tickets go on sale in February. Make sure to watch the February newsletter for details as tickets sold out in less than two weeks last year! You do not want to miss this amazing event!


6:30 pm: Antioch Speedway
This week’s races include Wingless 360 Sprints, A Mods, B Mods, Dwarf Cars, and Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5:00 pm with racing starting at 6:30 pm.

A little further out

May 21: 16th Annual Youth Conference & Empowerment Summit
Everything from how to find a job or preparing for college to how to make a film to dating relationships will be offered to the youth who attend the 16th Annual Youth Conference & Empowerment Summit Formerly known as the Youth Summit, this year’s countywide gathering of young people from 6th grade through high school, will discover that have a plethora of new offerings for their workshops, an integral part of the summit, which will be held at Pittsburg High School on May 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here’s a sampling of the other 40 workshops being offered:

  • Dance movement
  • Developing trust
  • Navigating the media maze
  • Healthy relationships
  • Empowering youth to change communities
  • Find your voice, find your ‘hustle’
  • Building a rocket
  • How to cope with violence
  • Access to new technologies

  • Trademarks of an effective leader

Besides the workshops, there will be inspirational speakers, entertainment, raffle prizes and dozens of resource tables. Before the program starts at 9 a.m., a light breakfast will be available so it is advised to arrive early.
