Governor Signs Bonilla’s School Garden Bill

AB 2367 will assist School Districts in maintaining their School GardensConcord (CA) – AB 2367, authored by Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla (D-Concord), was signed into law by Governor Brown to give explicit authority to schools who maintain school garden programs the authority to sell their produce and reinvest the funds into their garden programs.

Many schools in California have created school gardens to fulfill educational goals with the added benefit of bringing local quality produce to their communities. “I have seen in my own district the successes that can be achieved by integrating a school garden into the curriculum of various subjects,” said Assemblywoman Bonilla. However, with recent budget cuts, valuable programs like school gardens are vulnerable to reduction or even complete elimination.

“AB 2367 is a simple and common sense solution to recognize a sustainable source of funding and immunize school gardens from the threat of closure due to lack of state or federal funding,” said Assemblywoman Bonilla. “School gardens are vital to our society and help schools decrease obesity by bringing students outside and encouraging them to eat more fruits and vegetables.”
