ECCFPD Firefighters Train for Rural Fire Scenario

When East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) firefighters are not busy working calls for service, they are busy training and practicing for potential incidents. Yesterday, crews from Station 52 and 93 practiced using a portable tank and equipment to fight rural fires.

The goal was to test out equipment, improve skills which keep response times up, and further train the new firefighters. Fittingly enough, Engine 93 got called off training to go assist on a rural fire out in Byron.

This type of training is specifically important to folks in the Bethel Island, Byron and Knightsen areas where hydrants are scarce. These tanks, depending on size, can hold 500 to 5,000 gallons of water—the one used yesterday holds 3,000 gallons.

When these devices are used, crews (3-firefighters) will unload it off the truck, set it up, and a water tender will pull up and drop water into the tank—typically takes about 2-minutes.  When there is an actual fire, the District will use use three water tenders where 1-remains on scene, while two are transporting water and they rotate in and out of the tank area ensuring water is always available.

Not shown in the pictures below is the fact that when this occurs, three tanks are set up next to one another in a diagonal set-up to always ensure water is available—yesterday they just used one for testing and training.

Here are some shots of yesterdays training.
