Updated: 2-Alarm Vegetation Fire Burning Near Highway 4 Limited to 12-Acres

by ECT

Just after 1:00 pm Thursday, Contra Costa County Fire was dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire in the area of Highway 4 off Willow Pass Road.

According to CHP, they have shut down Avila Road.

By 1:35 pm, CONFIRE reported the fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire response.

UPDATE
Firefighters limited this vegetation fire to around 12-acres. Below is videos that we meshed together provided by our audience — warning: there is some foul language.

Update #2: Information provided by CONFIRE

Con Fire responded this afternoon, along with Cal Fire, MOTCO Fire, San Ramon Valley Fire to the first significant grass fire of this season.

Ten-to-12 acres were consumed by a fast moving, wind-driven fire along east bound Highway 4 just past the Willow Road on ramp before it was brought under control by the more than a dozen fire engines, water tenders, air support, hand crew and support personnel responding to the fire.

This fire is a good reminder that wildland fire season is upon us, conditions are already dangerous very early in the season and we all must exercise the utmost of caution outdoors.

It’s possible Red Flag fire conditions will materialize this weekend, serving to heighten the fire danger.

It’s also a good reminder for property owners who have not yet completed their required weed abatement that this work is critical and must be done immediately. Deadlines for weed abatement for most of the county are June 16.

The most important person when it comes to saving homes and other structures is not the firefighter who shows up at the time of the fire, but instead, the property owner who creates defensible space AHEAD of the fire.

Did this grass fire self-ignite?

Did this grass area ignite by itself?

No response, so I suppose it did start by itself. Vegetation is getting smarter.
