CHP: Motorcyclist Crashes into Vehicle on Highway 4 While Fleeing From Police

by ECT

On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at about 3:46 PM, a Martinez Police Department Officer saw a motorcyclist speeding in the area of eastbound SR-4, approaching Pine Street. The officer attempted to catch up to the motorcycle to initiate a traffic stop; however, the motorcycle continued east on SR-4 reaching an estimated speed of 100 MPH.

Initially, the officer activated emergency lights and sirens to initiate the traffic stop, but upon realizing the motorcycle was approaching traffic congestion at a high rate of speed, the officer turned off his emergency equipment in the area of SR-4 and Morello Avenue. The officer then pulled to the right side of the roadway to fall in behind traffic waiting to exit SR-4 at Pacheco Boulevard.

As the officer pulled to the right to exit the freeway, he noted an accident ahead of him in the area of eastbound SR-4 at the southbound 680 transition road. Around this time, a concerned citizen notified the officer that a motorcycled had collided into other vehicles and was blocking the roadway. At that point, the Martinez Police Officer rendered medical aid with the assistance of a bystander. Contra Costa County Fire Department and American Medical Response were requested and responded to the scene. The subject involved in the collision was determined to be the same subject who fled from the police officer only moments prior.

This traffic collision is still pending further investigation by the California Highway Patrol. If anyone witnessed this incident, we ask that they please call us at 925.646.4980.

Update per CHP:

This collision occurred when the motorcyclist collided with the right side of a Nissan, sideswiped the right side of a Lexus, and crashed into the back of a Dodge. After colliding with the Dodge the motorcyclist, a 31 year old from Oakley, was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the roadway. The motorcyclist sustained major injuries as a result of this collision. The driver and passenger of the Lexus complained of pain to their neck, back, and shoulder after the collision. No one else involved in the collision sustained injuries, including a two-year-old toddler who was traveling in a child safety seat within the Lexus.

We would like to take this time to ask motorists to please travel at safe speeds. Every life matters and it is each of our responsibility to keep each other safe.
