Brentwood Police Announce Arrest of Second Shooter in 24-Hour Fitness Fatal Shooting

BRENTWOOD, CA – During the course of this homicide investigation, Brentwood investigators positively identified Faatino Tauane (20-year-old Pittsburg resident) as the second shooter in this case.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at approximately 4:45 a.m., Tauane was peacefully taken into custody at a home in Antioch. Tauane was later booked at the Martinez Detention Facility for murder. To date, one firearm has been recovered and the vehicle Tauane used to flee the scene is now in police custody. A second firearm used in the shooting remains outstanding.

On Friday, August 26, 2022, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office charged Tauane with one count of murder with enhancements and additional felonies.

Sadly, this investigation revealed the victim in this case, Cesar Arana, was an innocent bystander not involved in the initial altercation. Mr. Arana was struck by gunfire while trying to help a person who had fallen to the ground during a physical fight outside.

Additionally, our agency would like to thank those who came forward with additional video footage and the staff at 24 Hour Fitness for their full cooperation throughout the entire investigation.

UPDATE #3

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office recently charged the 17-year-old suspect with murder for his involvement in this case.

The 17-year-old was one of two suspects detained and later arrested on Thursday, August 11, 2022 during the early stages of the investigation. The second suspect was released on the 11th after it was determined he was not a shooter.

The 17-year-old’s name is being withheld due to age.

UPDATE #2 (Aug 12)

The Brentwood Police Department announced that a 17-year-old has been arrested for murder after a shooting left a 21-year-old Antioch man dead and three others wound outside of the 24 Hour Fitness Gym in the City of Brentwood.

On Thursday, August 11, 2022, one of the two suspects detained during the early stages of the investigation has been positively identified as one of the shooters who was wounded during the altercation. The suspect, a 17-year-old Brentwood resident was booked into the Contra Costa County Juvenile Detention Center for Murder. His name is being withheld due to age.

Original Update

BRENTWOOD, CA – On August 11, 2022 at around 0154 a.m., Brentwood officers responded to the 24 Hour Fitness located at 5961 Lone Tree Way to investigate a reported shooting. When officers arrived on scene they located a male victim in his 20’s, suffering from at least one gunshot wound lying on a sidewalk in front of the fitness center. Officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, however, the victim died on scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed this was a result of an altercation that took place inside the fitness center, on or around the basketball courts, and eventually continued in the parking lot out front. While outside, the altercation escalated involving multiple people. Surveillance footage from 24 Hour Fitness revealed at least two people pulled firearms and fired multiple shots, striking four, killing one. Immediately following the incident, several people fled the parking lot in multiple vehicles.

This was an isolated incident with no apparent threat to public safety.

The motive is unknown at this time.

The name of the decedent is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

As of 11:00 a.m., two suspects have been detained but no arrests have been made.

Note: the last fatal shooting in Brentwood occurred in January of this year.

Very sad to read about Cesar Arana, an innocent bystander, just trying to do the right thing rendering aid to an injured person and winds up paying unexpectedly with his life. Wish this would stop.
