Assembly Dems Kill Melendez Bill to Build More Homes for Middle Class Families
SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Melissa A. Melendez’s, R-Lake Elsinore, announced today the Assembly Democrats killed her housing legislation, Assembly Bill 2856, to streamline housing developments for low and middle class families.
“Democrats can cut red tape to build football stadiums and basketball arenas, but they can’t cut red tape to build housing for the poor?” said Melendez. “It’s time Democrats stop lining their pockets with special interest dollars, and start doing something tangible about the housing crisis.”
Assembly Bill 2856 would have spurred new housing construction by limiting the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This bill would have only allowed violations that threatened the public’s health or the discovery of historical artifacts to stop home construction.
CEQA litigation has held up several housing developments in California, such as a San Francisco housing project for homeless teens for two years and a Berkeley housing project for very low income senior citizens for two years.
The Democratically-controlled legislature passed several CEQA exemptions for sport stadiums, such as the Sacramento Kings Arena, but they have supported little exemptions for housing projects.
“Families are spending over a third of their paycheck to keep a roof over their children’s heads. Only one-third of families can buy a median-priced home,” said Melendez. “The skyrocketing cost of housing has led to a homeless crisis never before seen in California.”
Assemblywoman Melissa A. Melendez represents the 67th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar and a portion of Hemet. It also includes the Riverside County unincorporated areas of Lake Mathews, Good Hope, Nuevo, and Winchester. Follow her on Twitter: @asmMelendez

California Politicians are out of touch with the citizens. They create selfserving perks and could care less about the middle and lower class. This is why they are using illegal migrants as pawns. All they want is money and votes to continue their easy street job. Of course some politicians such as Melendez are at least trying. California swamp needs draining too. Think about that when you vote to re elect.
It’s obvious, Democrats don’t care about building housing for the poor!
Both parties need to focus on passing laws on low cost rental apartment housing. We need to simplify the tax code 10% income tax for non rich people. 20% tax rate for the rich. Low taxes. Increase the minimum wage to 12.50 an hour. Fix the tax code first
Once you increase the minimum wage, the cost of everything else is increased and you’re back to square one! The rich are the ones who give us jobs. Why punish them with higher taxes? Why punish success?
Lola you sound like someone who has never researched the argument against their own. See why the Scandinavian countries are so successful and see the contingency with higher tax rates; it’s not a “punishment”. The rich don’t care about you/us or America, only themselves.
How would you know the rich only care about themselves?
Look what affordable housing did to Antioch
Simon, I think entitlements from our government are paying too much to those who have no intention on supporting themselves. The over generous entitlement money allowed welfare recipients to leave older Oakland and Richmond housing to get brand new housing. Anyone would make that move if it’s free money from the government. Unfortunately it seriously affected Antioch forever. The next migration to the Central Valley new housing will occurr when Antioch has been fully trashed. Affordable housing should be for people who work not people who work the government for free stuff. There is a difference.
So what’s the solution? Genocide of the poor? Public executions? Concentration camps for the poor?
I agree
Wait, I thought the democrats that are for handouts like affordable housing not the republicans? Plus, coliseums/sports generate money while affordable housing does not
