Via Fairfield Police:

The Vacaville Police Department is investigating an attempted murder and arson case that occurred in the City of Vacaville on January 14th, 2019 at 6:40 PM. Vacaville Police Department Communications Center received an initial call to a residence in the 1200 block of Alderwood Way for a structure fire with two victims who had been stabbed.

Personnel from both Vacaville Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene and found a 43-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl suffering from multiple stab wounds.  First-responders also confirmed the residence was engulfed in flames.  In addition to the two female stabbing victims, a 4-year-old girl was located suffering from multiple burn injuries.  All three injured victims were transported to trauma centers in the region.

Officers on scene quickly learned that a suspect, identified as Nathaniel Holland, was observed running from the scene of the stabbing and fire.  Additional information revealed that the crime started with an argument between Holland and the 43-year-old woman.  The suspect stabbed the 43-year-old woman, at which point the 16-year-old girl attempted to intervene and was then stabbed by Holland.  Holland had doused the interior of the home with gasoline as two teenaged boys, ages 12 and 15, and a four-year-old girl were also inside.  Holland had lit the inside of the house on fire and fled on foot.  Some of the children and the 43-year-old woman were initially prevented from escaping the fire due to the flames blocking the front of the house, requiring them to climb out a rear window.  The 4-year-old child was trapped inside the burning home but was rescued by one of the teenaged boys and a neighbor.  All victims were out of the residence by the time first responders arrived.

During the course of the attempted murder and arson investigation, additional officers from the Fairfield Police Department and California Highway Patrol, as well as a CHP helicopter, assisted Vacaville officers in attempting to locate the man suspected of committing those violent crimes.  Several K-9 teams were being used to search for the suspect, who was eventually spotted by a citizen near the 1000 block of Mason Street.  The citizen reported seeing the suspect in the area who was possibly armed with a knife.  Officers began to converge on the area in which Holland was last seen and set up a perimeter.

Multiple K-9 teams began searching for the suspect and a K-9 team from the Fairfield Police Department located Holland in a dense, wooded creek area to the rear of 1021 Mason Street at approximately 10:45 PM.  During the apprehension of the suspect, 38-year-old Vacaville resident Nathaniel Holland, was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries.  Preliminary investigation indicates a single Fairfield Police Officer fired at the suspect.  No officers were injured.

This incident invoked the Solano County-wide Officer Involved Fatal Incident Protocol and is being investigated by the Vacaville Police Department, the Fairfield Police Department, and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.  The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per policy.  Details regarding the officer-involved shooting will be released as they become available.  Additionally, a Fairfield Police K-9 was stabbed during the apprehension of the suspect.  The K-9 was treated at a veterinary hospital and is expected to survive.
