Tuesday: Contra Costa Board of Supervisors to Honor Veterans

by ECT

With Veterans Day coming up on Friday, Contra Costa County invites you to a very special ceremony tomorrow morning in Martinez.

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, the successful effort by the United States military, along with nearly 3-dozen partner nations, to force Iraq to withdraw forces from Kuwait.  Veterans from the Desert Storm era, as well as those who have served before and since, are invited to share in the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors annual recognition of the contributions of our bay area veterans.

The ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, in the Board of Supervisors Chamber at 651 Pine Street in Martinez, and will last until noon.

Keynote speaker Dr. Vito Imbasciani, currently the Secretary at the California Department of Veterans Affairs, will offer his unique perspective of his time serving during Desert Storm and other conflicts as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1986 – 2014.

The ceremony will also feature a presentation on the “Live-4-Box,” a unique and compelling tool aimed at preventing suicide among veterans.

In addition, there will be special reading by Poet Bill Nelson, whose service in Vietnam influenced his style of writing and storytelling.

County Veterans Service Officer Nathan Johnson invites veterans to stay after the ceremony for an opportunity to meet Dr. Imbasciani at the nearby Veterans Memorial Building in Martinez.

Contra Costa County is home to more than 65,000 veterans, with 500 service men and women returning home to our area each year after completing their military service.  The Board of Supervisors pays tribute and gives thanks each year to those who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.
