Brentwood – Supervisor Mary Nejedly Piepho, along with the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, recognize September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and call for increased public awareness about suicide prevention, knowing the signs and the resources available to help address mental health issues.

“I encourage the community to be aware of the services available and engaged in supporting each other during times of crisis,” stated Supervisor Piepho.

Supervisor Piepho and Oakley Council Member Diane Burgis met with County Behavioral Health and convened a  stakeholders meeting to further educate on the topic and raise awareness around suicide prevention.

The stakeholders meeting, held this past April 30th, included local Police Chiefs, school district members, Crisis Center and County Behavioral Health personnel, along with members of area medical and faith-based communities.

Suicide Prevention

There’s a myth that people who talk about suicide won’t really do it. This is wrong. Before attempting suicide, many people make direct statements about their intention to end their lives or less direct comments about how they might as well be dead or that their friends and family will be better off without them. Any reference to suicide should be taken seriously.
