Sen. Glazer Introduces Legislation to Ban Bullet Button

by ECT

Sacramento – Senator Steve Glazer, D-Contra Costa, announced today he introduced legislation to ban rifles with fixed magazines that are easily detached by a mechanism known as the bullet button.

Sen. Glazer is joint author with Sen. Isadore Hall, D-Los Angeles, on the bullet button ban, SB 880.

A bullet button assault-style rifle was used by the shooters who killed 14 people and wounded 21 in the San Bernardino terrorist attack last month.

“This isn’t about hunting or home protection,” said Sen. Glazer. “I believe everyone has a right to hunt and to protect their families from harm in their home. It’s about a mechanism on assault-style rifles whose sole purpose is to allow someone to kill a lot of people quickly.

“We need to make it more difficult for a deranged person to enter a schoolyard, movie theater, or workplace with a rapid fire weapon. This measure is another small but important step in making our communities safer.”

Existing law prohibits the possession or sale of assault weapons and limits magazines to 10 rounds. But a loophole in the law – allowing guns with fixed magazines to be modified with a simple “tool”– has led to the manufacture of assault-style guns with magazines that can be easily detached – contrary to the spirit of the assault-weapon ban. The magazines are equipped with a button that can be pressed by a bullet or other tool to quickly detach the magazine.

Since the magazine requires a tool, the magazine is considered “fixed” and therefore legal.

“For years, gun owners have been able to circumvent California’s assault weapon laws by using a small tool to quickly eject and reload ammunition magazines,” said Senator Isadore Hall. “These types of modifications have no legitimate use for sport hunters or competitive shooters. They are designed only to facilitate the maximum destruction of human life. Such weapons have been used in a number of domestic gun attacks including the recent terrorist attack in San Bernardino that left fourteen Californians dead and 21 injured. SB 880 is an important step to further protect Californians from our nation’s gun violence epidemic.”

The modification has allowed military-style rifles like the AR-15 to proliferate in the state, according to news reports. They’re some of the most popular guns used at gun ranges for target practice.

“Gun makers have exploited a loophole in the law that expressly prohibits assault weapons in California,” Glazer said. “We’ve seen the horror of these weapons with mass murders. We should not allow weapons that are designed specifically for modern warfare to proliferate on our streets.”

Senator Glazer worked as a senior staffer for Sen. President Pro Tem David Roberti in enacting a ban, in 1989, on assault weapons in California, the first state in the U.S. to do so. As mayor of Orinda, he was a charter member of the national organization, “Mayors Against Illegal Guns.”

Glazer, I would say Honorable but, he does not believe in what OUR forefathers had written and what came into force in 1789, OUR “U.S. CONSTITUTION”. People like Glazer, in today’s political world, think that they can change OUR rights. If this issue was to be put on a ballot, we that love OUR COUNTRY and have and are still willing to die for OUR FREEDOM know that it would not pass if WE were to VOTE on this subject. Yeah I’m pissed about this crap. In the meantime the bad guy wins and us honest folks lose. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, OUR FLAG AS WE KNOW IT, WILL HAVE 50 RED STARS.

Steve, this is not good for California and not good for you.

This legislation means you are one and done.

Hope you enjoyed your stay in the legislature. Adios Muchacho.

All of us swing voters will bury your sorry ass in the next election.

Steve
You truly have lost my vote. Real Americans do not mess with the constitution. This is another waste of legislature that erodes and chips away at our basic rights. If you want to do something productive fix our roads and create jobs. This is lazy legislating and just plain wrong.

Sen. Glazer’s legislation is reasonable and could save the life of someone you love. You can support gun rights without supporting rapid-fire death.

Rapid fire death? Come on really? It is the damn criminals that are screwing things up. It is obvious that you are afraid of guns. I am too. When the guns are in the wrong hands and I am looking down a barrel or hearing a round buzz over my head. So, when or if there is to be a time when you have a home invasion or a burglar entering your home and is armed, that’s okay with me. You may get your name in the local newspaper….the “obituary”. Do not be afraid to learn how to fire a gun. Learn about it the right way and the safe way. It can also be fun as being a sport in competition shooting weather it’s shotgun, rifle or pistol. If you don’t want to learn with an open mind, then its your loss. BTW, with your statement, you sound as if you are a liberal. Hmmm.

After this ban the next thing we should ban are HANDS! because hands kill people. Imagine a safe world with no hands to get in the way of our daily lives. We would be free from holding guns, knives, and bats. We would also be free from using any object as a weapon.

2016 campaign slogan, “No Hands, No Worries”

If these are the arguments raised against this bill in Sacramento, Sen. Glazer will have no trouble securing its passage.

@ gun safety saves lives .Austin shooter-Charles Whitman killed 14 and wounded 32 by himself with a BOLT ACTION… Seung-hui cho , the virgina tech shooter killed 32 and wounded 17 by himself with 2 PISTOLS …. Obviously banning more crap on ar-15 won’t stop killings . If you think about it , a deranged person would have a way easier time sneaking a pistol into a movie theater with some mags , than say a long rifle with a bullet button of course. How bout politicians focus elsewhere on more important matters . I.E. the drought, Isis, smog, etc..

Looks like Glazer will be a one term wonder. There is enough gun laws. Just enforce the ones we have. Did you know there are 20 thousand felons who show as owning a gun ? It is illegal for a felon to have a gun. Start there Steve. Lazy legislation against the 2nd amendment is your ticket out of politics.
