San Ramon Vice-Mayor Sabina Zafar Announces Campaign for Mayor

by ECT

SAN RAMON – On Friday, during a Facebook Live broadcast, Sabina Zafar announced her campaign for Mayor of San Ramon in the November 2020 election.  The current mayor is termed out and this is an open seat.

In November 2018, Zafar was elected to the San Ramon City Council.  She is the first Asian-American elected to the council in a city where a majority of residents are of Asian descent.  She was unanimously chosen by the Mayor and her Council colleagues to be Vice-Mayor earlier this year.

“On the City Council, I have adopted an open and inclusive approach to the City’s governance,” said Zafar. “ More residents are engaged in the decisions we make, strengthening the fabric of our community.  The Mayor and Council have provided valuable guidance to me and been open to doing city business in new ways.”

Zafar continued, “We are facing unprecedented issues with COVID-19.  As a city, San Ramon is learning how to keep our actions transparent and open and also provide the level of services that residents have come to expect.  To meet this challenge requires a steady hand and also innovative thinking. In my professional and public life, I have experience leading teams to find solutions to new problems.  This will be especially useful as Mayor.”

Prior to joining the City Council, Zafar served on the City of San Ramon Transportation Advisory Committee, the Board for San Ramon American Association of University Women, and the San Ramon Dougherty Valley Rotary Club. Currently, she serves on the Board of Bishop Ranch Intelligence Innovation Accelerator as a mentor for early stage startups; and as a board member of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs.

Zafar is a Technology Leader at General Electric Digital where she leads technology solutions for Global Industrial companies.

Zafar has raised both her children in San Ramon, her son is a computer engineer and her daughter is heading off to college in the Fall.
