San Ramon, Brentwood, Oakley Ranked in Top 40 Best Places for Young Families in California

On Thursday, the website NerdWallet provided its list of Best Places to Live which featured many cities in Contra Costa County as best places to live for young families.

The City of San Ramon was ranked No. 1:

Home to the headquarters of global energy giant Chevron, the city of San Ramon sits on the east side of the San Francisco Bay in the region known, appropriately, as the East Bay. The city of 75,000 scores well for family-friendliness, with 44.% of households consisting of married-couple families with at least one child younger than 18 (second-highest in the analysis) and just 2.4% of families with a child under age 5 living in poverty (tied for 300th out of 334). Schools are also strong, with a score of 93.41 out of 100, good for 14th-highest in our analysis. On the other hand, San Ramon was one of the least affordable of all of the places analyzed, with a median home value that ranks as the 34th highest and median selected monthly owner costs that are the 18th highest on the list.

Also on the list was the City of Brentwood who was ranked No. 19 while the City of Oakley was ranked 38. Danville was ranked 42 while Walnut Creek came in at 72.

Martinez was ranked at 206, Concord came in at 232, Pittsburg at 264 while Antioch was listed at 296 and Richmond at 319. Bay Point was at 328.

Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor explained how he was pleased the city was high on the list because that has always been their goal to attract young families.

“Brentwood has always been one of the best cities to live in to raise a family,” said Taylor. “Our future growth has always been planned for young families to purchase a home so they can live where they play.”

NerdWallet analyzed 334 locations in the Golden State to find the places that offer the best combination of affordability, quality schools, future growth and prosperity, and family-friendliness.

Key takeaways include:

  • Top places are clustered in five areas. Of the top 10 places, six are in the three metro areas anchored by San Francisco, San Jose and the state capital of Sacramento, while the remaining four are in the Los Angeles metro area and the fast-growing region to the east known as the Inland Empire.
  • Smaller suburbs score big. Eight of the top 10 places are under 75,000 residents. The highest-scoring city over 300,000 in population? Bakersfield, with 364,000 residents, ranked 124th overall.
  • The top places tend to be on the pricier side. Eight of the top 10 places have median home values that are more than the median in the analysis. But the most expensive places don’t score well in the overall analysis: Of the cities with the highest home values, none ranks higher than 103rd out of 334 places.

Note to Bob Taylor-it’s about CHEAP housing. That’s what attracts young families. Aside from cheap housing Brentwood doesn’t hold a candle to other local communities. Brentwood is no jewel.

It’s no wonder he is the Mayor of Hayseedville! What a slug.

Hey “dawg”
Brentwood became the city it is by many different residents and the many focus groups over 25 years.

The many residents, city administrations and endless committees worked hard over the years to produce the beautiful city it is.

You knowledge of Brentwood lacks information.

To blame your point of view on any one person or group demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the East County and its history.

We all know the local jewel is Antioch, and we are about to show everyone we are better than any Bay area city because we have $75,000 to spend on “positive news” to make us shine!

Move over San Ramon, Orinda, Lafayette, Hillborough, and all you cities with your low crime and outstanding schools. You’re about to see what $75,000 will do!
